Won this, can't find a war galley with three towers anywhere. The reverse is a bit mangled so not helping with the ID. Looked in the usual places, any suggestions?

Thanks Chris, mine only has one lion below. I can't give size or weight until I get it in hand. I have no idea what is on the reverse.

I am going to have to look around for this one. I don't think I have seen one quite like this. I wonder if it is an over strike....must investigate further.

http://www.coinarchives.com/a/resul...search=sidonMaybe number 14, but lower down on the page are some other possibilities. They have three towers, and mention a lion. There numbers are 69, 71, 81. After looking more, I think 14 or 81 are the best matches. You can see the outline of the reverse matching your coin.

Thanks Noob.
Awallin, that is great, I looked on that site and found nothing, evidently wrong search criteria. I still can still not make out anything meaningful on the reverse, might have to wait until I get it in hand.

I've seen a few of these but none with the towers. Interesting find.

Yeah I think the reverse is the bowman, if you turn the reverse 90 degrees counter clockwise that should match :). Once turned, the bow will be the part on the right arcing out. And the lower parts are the bowman's legs. The two (14,81) I think are the best matches, but the size's are very similar(1mm in it).

Nice coin. awallin is right. A glance at CNG's archives using "sidon shekel" as keywords shows many similar obverse motifs. That's always an easy and useful resource when searching for IDs. Do you have any concrete reason to say this is a 1/8 shekel? The examples we're finding suggest that it is a sixteenth shekel. http://cngcoins.com/Search.aspx?PAG..._TYPE_ID_4=1

Thanks TIF
It was the seller's information that said it was 1/8th and it comes with an old typed card that says it is an 1/8th. I think you are all correct saying that it is 1/116th. I received it this morning. It weighs in at 0.70g and is about 9mm.
I will try and post photos later, there appears to be something to the left of the left tower and also something in the sky top right of the left tower. The reverse is a bit difficult to see properly, but it is the bowman.

My pics plus the two closest I can find. I don't think mine can be described as VF considering the reverse! Maybe it will clean up a little. CNG 88, Lot: 505. Estimate $300. Sold for $320. This amount does not include the buyer's fee. PHOENICIA, Sidon. temp. Baalshillem (Sakton) I-Ba'ana. Circa 425-401 BC. AR Sixteenth Shekel (7mm, 0.69 g, 11h). Phoenician pentekonter sailing left; city wall in background; below, lion advancing left / King of Persia standing right, drawing bow, quiver over shoulder; behind, incuse head of satyr left; before, incuse head of goat right. E&E-S 362-448; Betlyon 10; Rouvier 1093; HGC 10, 230. VF, find patina. Rare.

Well after looking back on the ones I numbered, the sites changed the coins positions . Any chance of a view from further afield aswell, from your camera? And you say about 9mm? http://www.coinarchives.com/a/resul...earch=towers Your one or the current number 14 which is 9mm are good matches. The one thing is, are the two marks on the obverse signifying something? That has to be the oldest coin I've seen on here, wow!

The two "things" on the obverse can be seen in the first picture I posted. They might just be blobs!

I got around to this coin this morning, trying to improve on the photos. What I see has made me uneasy. This is my supposedly oldest coin and I am very fond of it, now I am wondering whether it is a fake. Opinions please?
