I am rather intrigued by these handsome prototype coins, but skeptical of claims that they were minted in anticipation of a vote for independence. Really? Would 20,000 sets have been minted if a Yes vote was anticipated?

They have them everywhere. Catalonia has them too, and their vote was completely undermined by the corrupt PP.

It would not have mattered if a 'yes' or a 'no' vote had been anticipated. It is just seen as a commercial numismatic opportunity, and is simply a matter of deciding how many sets that they think the collector market will absorb.

If you want to buy them then do so, but I don't normally have any reaction to unofficial NCLT issues.

Then they aren't just a gimmick or novelty, but might legitimately appeal to certain segments of the collector market. Thank you for the replies.

Your skepticism is well-founded.

If Scotland had voted "yes", they wouldn't have become independent straight away and wouldn't have started making coins straight away; it would have taken a year or two at least before independence was actually declared, which much to discuss about what currency unit to use and what kinds of coinage and banknotes would be made. The coins in question have no official status whatsoever, they are privately-made "fantasy patterns".

Without wanting to delve too deeply into the politics of the 'Independence' referendum, Independence was never on offer. Scotland would have remained within/rejoined the EU, therefor negating the whole thing.
The vast majority of legislation and policies of the UK are taken by the EU, in Belgium, to which we are legally compelled to abide.
There would have been no 'Independence', certainly when it came to the definition as applied by the ordinary person on the street.

Well I'd still like to know where I can get one of these:
Scot-Mint-Prototype-Proof-Sets

or these:

Scot-Mint-Prototype-Proof-Sets

reportedly made "at a facility funded by Sir Sean Connery" or should we say, the Sir Sean Coinery?

I would like to have some of those. As well as "serious" UK coins, I enjoy fun items like this. If anyone knows where they can be found, please post it.
