Which features in particular were changed?

Can someone do an overlay?

According to Q David Bowers, The original Morgan hubs and master dies were destroyed in 1910. They were "recreated" in 1921 using an actual 1878 coin as a model. A lot of the original relief was lost in the recreation process and along with other design changes, the 1921 has very flat and unappealing look when compared to its 1878-1904 counterparts. This is paraphrased from his Morgan dollar book. So to answer your question on what was changed...just about all except the original "theme".
I also recollect reading somewhere else it was Sinnock and not Morgan who performed the redesign.
Personally, I only collect 1878-1904...the coins made from the original hubs and master dies. I don't like 1921 Morgan-like dollars. I consider them to be high mintage "junk silver", just like a 1922-P Peace dollar.
I'm sure many here remember the dealer ads from the past that said "Please, no 1921's" for the buying of Morgan dollars.

They do have a very different look to them even though they are the exact same design. I'm not a big fan of the 1921s.

It's like, somebody redrew the Morgan faces while holding one in their hand for reference, and made the dies that way. Allowances were also made for easier striking, knowing they had to simply blow all previous production records into the weeds to have a hope of meeting the Congressional mandate for replacing melted Morgans. We melted 270 million Morgans, half of all ever struck during 26 years of production, and had to replace them all in about a third of the time.

If you overlay a 1921 on an earlier Morgan, all you'll get is a headache. Every single line will be close but different.

I kinda like like my 1921-D Morgan for a couple of reasons;

The only "D" mint mark in the series

and my 1921-D Morgan VAM-3A Wing Dot is not too shabby

As stated above, it wasn't so much that the design was changed as it was in minor aspects imperfectly reproduced.

Yup, cuss. I love the Mexican Liberty Cap 8 Reales way more than 1921 "Morgans". Looks like u are a fan of Mexican Republic coins as well.

Take the 1921 out of the overlay and then you will have a real Morgan dollar.

Pre-1921s look like High Relief Morgans compared to 1921s. oih82w8 makes a good point about the D mintmark, 1921 has the only "D" mint mark in the series.

Not commemorative at all. They needed to slap together a design really quick to start minting ASAP. It was a very rushed process and as SuperDave said, they had to produce millions of dollars very fast. The need for fast production is also why we got the even lower relief Peace design in 1922. The higher relief 1921 Peace simply could not be produced fast enough.

The 21 Morgan was not, but technically the 21 Peace dollar was a commemorative. It was struck to mark the Peace coming from the end of the First World War. (WWI did NOT end in 1918, that was just an cease fire. The War did not actually end until the signing of the Peace Treaty in Nov 1921. The Peace dollar was then RUSHED into production so it could be struck in the same year the Peace was declared. They barely made it with production started on December 28th.)
