Trends uses a percentage breakdown on Can cents but coins I have graded from TPG do not use a scale of 50 to 100% and some auction sites state quite boldly a coin will be 90% red but how reliable is this ? This red brown / red stuff is way off the mark and ICCS is definitely color blind.

Let me start by saying that I don't consider Trends to be a meaningful/accurate valuation tool. That being said, I think the red/brown ratios are much like other aspects of grading: it's all subjective. I'm not aware of any TPGs who specify a degree of 'red' on their comments, but I could very well be wrong on that front. None of mine state any specific degree of red, other than the generic 'RED' comment.

According to CCCS, they use the following scale
when grading coins.
Red 90-100%
Red & Brown 50-85%
Trace Red 10-40%

Do they actually specify the % in the comment field, or simply the narrative based on the scale you noted?

Just the narrative. ICCS and PCGS use different thresholds from each other. There are some older threads on the subject. I believe ICCS has the lowest threshold to earn a Red comment.

Nope!! I recall having this conversation with Louis Chevier at a Torex several years ago. CCCS follows a similar scale for preservation of red lustre as ICCS. I recall being disappointed at the time, because I preferred (and still prefer) PCGS standards. That is, unless CCCS has changed recently. Louis Chevier is a member of CCF, perhaps he can comment on this thread.

I have always bean little curious about how the percentage red is calculated. As far as I can tell, the Canadian services just kind of wing it when they measure the percentage. So if they don't measure it accurately, having a scale with set percentages tying into particular labels is kind of meaningless. Does anyone know if PCGS uses any kind of machine vision to assess the percentage red?
