Just finished a roll of Walking Liberty halves. I have chosen them pretty carefully, the average grade is about VF. I figured $10 face of uncirculated halves would weigh 250 grams and going by the industry standard of just over 1% loss for circulated coins they should come in at about 247 grams. They weigh 245.4
Not too bad considering they are a popular type.

It's possible this term dates back to the late '70's when the Hunts were cornering the market, I remember dealers not interested in 40%, too "dirty" even at $50 silver, as the Hunts wanted as pure as could be.
