I'm tempted by them too. They seem to sell well on ebay but they seem to be so common in dealer's junk bins that I question any additional premium.

As a stacker, they've normally lost way too much weight for my liking.

What about Franklin halves in circulated? Have they lost too much weight for stackers?

14x face = 13% premium above melt value. How does that compare to 1000 fine bar silver?

Its tough to find walkers at 14% near me. Most of the dealers around me are asking like 16X or more.

Quote: As a stacker, they've normally lost way too much weight for my liking. Agree with you on this one. The standard is 7.15 ounces per $10 face, and with Walkers it's hard to hit that. But I am not going to lie, they are one of my favorite coins. Quote:What about Franklin halves in circulated? Have they lost too much weight for stackers? They weren't in circulation as long when the govt stopped making 90% silver. Generally speaking, they are not going to be as worn as Walkers. I find EF+ Franklins in dealer junk silver bins all the time. Quote: 14x face = 13% premium above melt value. How does that compare to 1000 fine bar silver? There are premiums on silver bars as well. The biggest coin shop in town here sells generic silver at spot plus $2.50 so the premium percentage is about the same.

Picking up some better walkers or franklins at a LCS can be a pretty good deal as there are a lot of people that collect Albums and need to fill empty spots. A couple of months ago, the owner of our LCS was on his way out for an important lunch with a new girlfriend, so he told his employee to sell me some kennedy, franklin, walker, and barber Dansco albums around melt. I bought about everything they had, and most were about 85% filled. The problem is I have then had to go to ebay and been paying way too much to fill the remainder of the album. In the end, these 15% of the albums will cost a lot (i.e., $21 for a franklin).

I metal detect a lot of my Walkers, just this spring a 1917 at about 10" deep near an old ice skating area in a park.
I like to stack 'em when I can find them in nice shape. My favorite is a '38D key which I bought off a teller for $5, was from her personal collection of silver halves she's pulled off the 'line.
