Just wondering if any of you collect junk silver and ASE's with the goal of finishing rolls. I know I used to just get what I could off ebay auctions and stack them and when I had enough I just put them in tubes but know with the new local LCS around I am buying in lots to complete tubes of silver. My latest is trying to fill my first complete tube of ASE but I can only afford 1 a week. Hoping silver stays down long enough for this to happen.

I'm currently working on completing a quarter roll of junk silver. I really have no reason for doing it except that I'm OCD and I want to complete that roll before I start buying some other form of junk silver. I try to get some junk silver every other week and I buy anywhere from 2-5 dollar face value which depends on how much cash I happen to have on me at the moment. I will finish the quarter roll probably this week and then I will start working on some other roll.

I just completed a roll of junk silver Washington quarters. I have 4-5 90% halves laying around so I think I will start adding to these until I get another 90% silver roll. John...good luck with the ASE roll. I do not have a roll of ASE, but I do hope to add a roll one day soon.

@ Connor, I got to be honest it happened by chance with the ASE's. I realized when I was at my LCS buying junk silver that I had 6 - 2014 ASE's at home and saw the plastic tube and went hmmmm this can work. I have seen on Youtube and other pics here on the forum of tubes full of ASE's and it looks Nice. So if silver prices drop and stay down I should have enough ASE's eventually but if prices go up I may not complete it until next year. @ Okie1987, I started the rolls of junk silver because I read somewhere that you can get a premium on rolls of junk silver than if you sold them individually. I am stacking only for investment purposes and because I have OCD when it comes to silver. I love the metal.

I have hundreds, more than half were built via roll hunting. Sold dozens, mostly 40% halves. I have found over one dozen solid silver rolls in the last six years, have found 50+ solid wheat rolls, and found two solid rolls of steel wheats.
When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors... Roll hunting since '77 Dirt fishing since '72

I just bought a roll of dimes, which thankfully is much cheaper. A roll of ASE's would be nice, however I would go for different dates for ASEs just because personally I would want to try to put the dates together.

I've done a roll of Mercs, Rosies, War Nickels and Washingtons so far. Haven't bought any in a while but I've also been working on a roll of Franklins and Kennedy's.

I can't do it with ASEs. They all go into the Dansco as a date collection (10 more and my first set will be completish until January of each year). I have started my first two tubes though. The first was the 1 oz silver merc design from Provident and the second is 40% halves. The halves started by accident while on ebay. I was able to find 8 40% and 2 90% for $5. Without much interest in 40%, I had to find something to do with them.

For some types, like Washington quarters, I just finish one tube, then start the next without much thought. For others, like Standing Liberty quarters or Barber dimes, I hope to one day complete a tube. It's a slow process because I don't always find them at the LCS, and I want to choose fairly nice ones, not dateless or AG. I can still tell that they take up less space in the tubes, so it will be interesting to weigh them when the tubes are complete. It's still worth it because those types are popular. For ASE's, I find them a bit boring, so once I finish a tube, that will probably be it unless I get some great deal.

My story, to add to this thread goes as follows. I too gather a few orphan small 90% junk lots off of ebay and before you know it I have five unfinished coin tubes and two partial 1 oz. silver bullion tubes cluttering my desk. So I posted WTB ads on some precious metal sites I belong to asking for a hand in topping off these tubes. So far I have knocked out three tubes of US junk in the month of January. But I promised I won't start purchasing anything other items to complete my partial tubes. I hope my wife isn't monitoring the checkbook to close this month.

An update to my silver rolls.... So as I said, I'm starting in on 40% because they are the nicest of coins and they just don't go into all of my 2x2s. Well, a retiree was on base and said that he had a bunch of coins to sell off. He sold me a Morgan (1904 in XF) for $25, a 64 half for $6, and 10 40% halves for $1.75 each. So now, I have my first actual junk silver roll complete. I did have to take one of the 40% halves out as I just couldn't put a high AU/low MS coin into a junk roll. It was a purtty one.

I'm one coin away from completing a 40% half roll form CRH. I don't go out of my way to complete rolls of silver, but I roll hunt so much that I do have quite a but of silver piled up. I'm waiting for silver prices to go up again and then I will likely sell most of it.

I have been buying junk silver and 1 ASE a week in an attempt to complete 1 roll of ASE's, JFK, Franklin and Walking Liberty halves, Washington quarters, Roosies and merc's, but with Silver on the rise my purchase power has just dropped a bit. I am close with the JFK's, Franklins, Washington's and Roosies and 13 coins away from the roll of ASE's being completed, but I got to tell you I took out the 7 I have and they really sound and look nice coming out of the plastic tube. :)

I accumulate junk silver as 'collateral buy' when it is included in small lots of World and ancient coins that I may be interested. Philosophically, I just see silver accumulated in this way as a free bonus.
As a result, my junk silver stash has a huge variety within it. A low grade numismatic sub collection within my collection.

Hard to see 40% halves as junk, but I guess it all is now, and we call it junk, yet to some of us who like halves we just can't part with them, in searching for a few years, I've found so many in just beautiful condition like they just came from the mint. Or, they were sitting in someone's basement and all moldy. I do know one thing, when it comes time to sell, my 40% collection would be the first to go.

i never understood why it was called junk silver its still silver and has value. lol anyway 90% is one of my favorites as far as stacking goes. my local dealer usually sells it to me at spot so thats the main reason. I also like it cause theres so much history behind it compared to ASE.
