I received this 1978 Commemorative Dollar, and was
looking at the obverse, because all of the information
that is usually on the reverse of a dollar coin
(Canada, Dollar, and date) is on the obverse of
this coin, there was not enough room for D G Regina.
As well, the information from the reverse plus
Elizabeth II encircles a smaller portrait of the Queen.

For a specimen strike coin, it has no frosted finish
on the legends or devices, and is so brilliant it is
difficult to photo. 1974 Obverse on bottom to compare.

Comments welcome.

Thanks very much @Numoose, it is a very neat
series to collect, only 50% silver so very
affordable, I am getting most of these 70's
and 80's commemoratives for under $10 each.
If you think about it, that's a lot of enjoyment
for the price of couple cups of coffee. The issue is
the red felt hairs are inside the capsule and the
airtite is old and scratched. Had to shoot
at an angle to get a decent shot of the coins.

So technically this is not a silver dollar but a silver medallion correct?

Thanks @ace_ftw,
I think the definition goes something like this;
As it bears a denomination and is issued by an
entity, it is currency, and therefore legal tender
(Non-circulating), even if it is on the obverse.
So it is a dollar rather than a medallion. Correct
me if I'm out of whack here. I don't believe a
medallion bears a denomination.

term "coin" is normally used within this hobby to refer to a piece bearing a monetary value and issued as money (usually by an official entity)

The piece shown was definitely issued as a coin vs. a medal/medallion. It was authorized and issued as legal tender by the Government of Canada through the RCM.

The value of its silver content at the time of issue was about $2.00 which was double its face value. It had an issue price of $4.50. So, from Day 1, its intrinsic value (and cost to own) exceeded its denomination and thus it never made sense for the piece to be used as a traditional coin (i.e., to be spent at face value). That's why I generally consider these NCLT "coins" to be medals with a symbolic denomination.

Regardless of what you call them, I enjoy collecting Canada's silver dollars and will continue to do so!

Thanks for that clarity @Commems.
Interesting economics of the silver price
and the premium originally paid on this coin.

There are .375 ounces of silver in the coin
and at $18.45/oz that yields $6.92 today.
