I know they were minted in the mid 1960s, and then I saw that they were also struck from 2005-2010. What sets these apart from normal mint set coins? Is there a difference?

Also, I saw some from the '60s that carry an MS cameo designation. Are these worth the premiums that ebay is charging?

When buying, what's better, graded or raw? What are good prices and grades?

Sorry for the wall of questions.

The 1965, 1966, and 1967 Special Mint Set (SMS) coins were minted instead of both the normal mint and proof sets. The earlier strikes from a die pair were proof-like, the later strikes were pretty much uncirculated.

The 2005-2010 mint sets were made with a special satin finish. Much different from normal uncirculated coins, earning them SMS or specimen status from those who acknowledge this difference.

The differences are as jbuck pointed out. If a 65,66, or67 has a cameo designation, it is most certainly worth a premium. How much is a totally subjective thing.

It can be difficult to tell them outside of the OGP so I would say slabbed would be your better bet unless you feel you can trust the seller.

Sorry to bring this back up, but is it worth it to differientiate between regular modern JFKs and the SMS ones? I am labelling a custom half Dansco and am wondering whether I should include holes for these?

Only if you care to include separate holes for them.

Here is how I look at it...

If you are bothering to collect the proofs, and especially both clad and silver proofs, then yes. If you only want business strikes (issued for circulation or not), then no.

Just my humble opinion, of course.

I am adding the 2005-2010 'satins' to my JFK album. 12 extra holes to fill.
In my case, I'll be adding mostly business strikes, as I filled my album
initially with mint sets, so most holes are already satin (aka SMS). I
only used one or two business strikes in that date range because a couple
halves were nasty looking straight out of their mint sets. They are pretty
easy to tell apart.

I am also adding holes for all this year's JFK halves. 10 holes total in 2014.

Thanks! I think I will add holes for these. This is what I was leaning towards, and there are empty spots in the "proof only" album that I am making. Perfect fit! Pics will be posted when I get the whole thing labelled and nice looking.
