Or did that part of the middle of the D on the die break off?

Haha thanks! My pics used to be horrible but I've gotten better-mostly playing with the lighting-shiny coins give me the most trouble still

On the die to form the center of the mint mark, there is a post that shapes the inside of the mint mark "D". This some times breaks off (Gradually in the case on your coin) and leaves a void. This make the center of the mint mark to be unformed. On the later years this post was made larger to slow down the breakdown of the post and the mint mark center would remain longer.
