I have often cut clear acetate sheets into 2"x2" squares, to be used as protective inserts inside cardboard / Mylar 2x2 flips.
The acetate sheet is of the same sort and thickness as used as the protective slide window in the round hole 'push in' type coin albums.
The acetate sheet can be recovered from other packaging. such as shirt boxes or clear box packaging for Christmas cards.

This approach is particularly useful for providing extra protection for large coins with soft metal, such as Double Eagles or early 19th century British pure copper pennies.

You can't see that the extra acetate protection has been used when installed inside the flip.

Acetetate must be OK, otherwise Dansco and Whitman wouldn't use this material.

Any comments or questions?

I have never tried the method, because, as I see it Saflips and cardboard 2x2's are already as useful as they need to be.
Although if it works for you it and for Dansco and Whitman albums then it must be fine. I'm just not the person to go that extra mile (Ahem... Lazy)

Interesting.
Not something I've ever done or even thought about.
And nowadays NOT something I really need to consider.
All my better coins are in slabs.
And most of my raw coins are in Intercept Shield albums.
And my inexpensive coins are not worth the added work and protection.

if the coins are worth the extra protection are they worth the risk of introducing an anonymous source of possible contaminants?

cardboard flips come in a variety of sizes and are good enough for me.
