I am interested in hearing grading theories on how to approach grading a coin where the Obverse and Reverse carry significantly or even slightly different grades. What is the best way to reach a final grade for the coin? I cannot recall seeing a discussion of this issue in any kind of detail...I did find a reference to the question in one book, but now cannot locate that reference again! (The book was Grading Guide for Early American Copper Coins by Eckberg, Fagaly, Fuoss, and Williams).

Most grading is subjective..even professional grading services can vary from within and among experts.
Generally the obverse takes priority over the reverse in determining the final grade..if only because
it gets seen more in presentation. This is true whether there are minor differences in grade from front
to back or more significant grading differences. Hope this helps you navigate the sometimes choppy waters
of coin grading.

When we're talking about Mint State coins whose grades are usually defined by marks, I lean heavily towards grading on the weakest face. The moment wear starts to appear, and any other time it might be appropriate, I feel a whole lot more should be given to die state and strike quality than is currently done.

I've seen too many coins which had only circulated enough to achieve AU wear being downgraded to EF because an old die had been paired with a new one. News flash: if the reverse only circulated to AU, then so did the obverse. They didn't wear in separate pockets. It's a copout, to me. You gotta think harder before rubber stamping the coin.

Most grading starts with the obverse on the theory that's what you see first. That grade is the MAXIMUM. If the reverse is then significantly WORSE, the overall grade goes down. If the reverse is significantly better, the grade stays the same.

Thanks everyone. I would have thought some kind of averaging might be in order to reach a final grade. But I guess that is just not done. It seems to me that if the reverse would grade higher, then that ought to count for something.
