This is my first foray into ancients. I'll likely stick to learning and acquiring references in the near future, but I believe my main focus will be on those coins minted in London or what likely would have circulated in Roman Britain (or commemorative types related to Britannia). I bought this from a respected local dealer. Couldn't take my eyes off of it. Enjoy!

Very nice first coin. I love busts that are non standard like that one with the spear and helmet. He looks pretty happy too, haha.

to Ancient coin collecting.

For your first ancient you got a very nice coin. Left facing bust type coins are more desirable than the normal right facing ones. Your coin has excellent detail. Congrats.

Nice little Ae.
Don't forget that some emperors took the name Britannicus and have BRIT as part of the legend. Commodus and Caracalla come to mind.
I have a sestertius of Caracalla with a crowded reverse scene of Victory, Britannia and 2 prisoners seated and a military trophy set up in the middle.

Some people go 'nuts' for things like that. I bought a beautiful green sestertius of Verus with the name ARMENIACVS spelled out boldly. My Armenian friends loose their minds when I show them.

Twenty something years ago at the New York show I saw a man who set up a table with but one coin in his case. A beautiful sestertius of Britannicus (son of Claudius). He was asking $15,000. I had just taken a home equity line of credit and it was veeery tempting.
I really wish I had done it. Probably would sell for triple today !

Thanks for the comments! I picked up a book "A History of Roman Coinage in Britain" by Sam Moorehead. It's fantastic and exactly what I was looking for to get started. A wonderfully illustrated and helpful guide to what coins circulated in Roman Britain. I was able to use this reference to pinpoint what emperors operated the mint in London, which is going to be my main focus of my collection. I am also exploring Britannica commemorative issues as well, such as the VICTORIAE BRIT coins of Severus/Caracalla as well as others as I discover them. Should be quite the challenge for some, if not impossible!
