hi
I have three of different medals in pewter/lead . From two , there exist effectively a medal , from the third not . I was searching everywhere possible , but found nothing . My question is : why these impressions in pewter/lead are made ? Was it a test to control the result or were there other reasons ?
The medals are from an artist of Bruges (Belgium) :De Hondt ,1786-1869 . I have almost all the medals he made ,but there is still a big problem of identification with the third one .

Really nice assortment of those medals. And even though only medals, great collection. Why they were made? Mostly so someone would buy them of course.

the medals have no reverse and are in a soft metal , so I think if you want to buy , you buy the real one

I have several coin club medal sets with the die, the actual medal and the lead impression. The lead impression was made and given to the customer (the coin club)so they could see the design before the actual medals were struck. I really don't know for sure but my guess is the lead impression is before the die is hardened. Then any minor design changes can be made before the die is hardened and put into production. But this is just a guess.

A very accurate guess. They're design approval pieces.

I was thinking in the same way , test impressions for the maker and the customers to examine all the details of the die before approving
