i was at the post office the other day, and decided to see if per chance they might have a set with the old style loonie. I saw two sets there, one from 2014, and one from 2013 I believe.

what I found strange is the 13 looked to be the new multi layered planchet with old style dies, but the 14 looked to be old style planchet with old style dies.

is this normal?, or did an old style plancet get tossed in with the new stuff?

were there other 2014 sets there to compare it to?

if only one set had nickel/brass I would've snapped it up, if they all had nickel/brass then... meh...

Specimen sets used the older loon dollar type. What "set" did you see at the post office?

im not sure exactly what set it was as my focus was on the loonie. I just know it had one of every denomination, and not sure it had extras like a silver dollar. I looked at canada mints site yesterday and found that for sets they use a variety of different plating materials for the loonie including brass, gold, and bronze, (probably the one I saw),. I could swear it had a date on the reverse though, but on the mints site that one is gold plated. I did not believe gold would have the same appearance as aureate though. this may be the set I saw?

i went back and at $225 I guess it is the set I posted above. well then... they did a good job of mimicking gold from 1987 to 2011 for circulation coins. just hope I'm able to spot a difference if ever I come across a gold plated silver loonie or toonie in change.
