I have a friend who gave me about 20.00 worth of pennies.
she knows I collect and just asked me for the face value..

I pulled a bunch of wheaties out of them (earliest is 1919), they are soaking in acetone at them moment..

I saw lots of older copper pennies. mostly 60's through 70's.

Is it really worth my time to separate the copper from the rest?
will a coin shop pay me more for rolls of copper pennies?

I'd say about half are pre-1983.

what do you think?

I don't think a coin shop will buy them unless they are wheaties and even then you would be lucky to get 2 cents each. If you want to save up a bunch of non wheat copper cents you may get a small profit from ebaying them but personally it's not worth the hassle,IMHO.

I've been keeping coppers, Some day I'll go through them and look for varieties. Neat way to spend a little quiet time!
Rest in Peace

If copper goes back up over $4+ a pound again you might get some interest. Right now at $2.78 there is little or no interest.

I still have a guy buying them for 120$ per 100$ face. I sell him 200$ face at a time. I used to get 145 or 150 per 100$ face. This is selling direct to people, so no fees. I lost a shipment one time through USPS - will never ship 100$ in pennies through them again.

I go through the pennies for visible (to the naked eye) errors, wheats, 2009 doubled dies, IHC, foreign, etc.
I figure I might as well make an extra 20$ for the copper.

But you are right, that market has dried up considerably.
