Finally came to an agreement on price at my LCS. Would the paper guys give me some grade opinions, please! There are no holes or rips.Paper looks clean. I believe the bank is rather common, but I'm glad it's now in my collection! Thanks!

Appears to be a very solid low end VF note.

86 total large notes known from this bank, 33 of those are the $5 plain backs like your note.

Thanks for the replies. Nationals are unique to collect, lots of different factors change their value.Would a bank located in the state capitol city be a factor? My hometown had one bank..Our notes are hard to come by, and very pricey! Then the bank re-chartered in about 1933. Wow , another issue!

There are many, many ways to collect these things. Some people want just one note from each state; some want one from each capital in each state. Some people collect one from each letter of the alphabet. Some collect small size only, some collect large size only. I collect notes from my home town (McKinney, TX) and the State of Texas.

By and large the "killer collection" would have to be a large size state capital collection. There is only one large size national from Carson City, Nevada known. So, putting together a large size state capital collection is going to cost a boat load of money!

Thank You!, westernsky. Hope you read this post,as, I have the chance to buy a ty-1 small national $50, written on the first national bank, Houston,Tx. I would guess this note is a solid VF, with a light stain above the front portrait.. Any opinions of its aprox. value would help. The paper looks bright and the stain don't ruin the eye appeal..I know pics' would help, but, its at a shop nearby, and I did not want to take pics'. What I'm not sure about is the value differences in the green sheet and the paper money books..!!? Thanks, all.

As a general rule, most notes from the larger cities do not command the premium that a note does from a smaller town.

You also had the larger banks from the larger cities that issued more high denominations than the banks did from the smaller towns. So, if you are collecting types then sometimes the larger towns are the best way to go for the high denominations.

Before committing to buying a note do your homework and see what like notes have sold for. Heritage (ha.com) has a good database for reference. To see HA prices realized at auction you have to register for an account (but it is free). You can also search ebay items sold and get some ideas, too.

Whatever way you decide to collect do your homework and get the most value for your money.
