Somebody was asking me today about the First Spouse coins, and I thought I remembered hearing or reading that there was enough grumbling about them being gold (and expensive) that the mint was going to put out some spouse coins in a cheaper metal.

Did I make that up? I can't find a reference to it anywhere.

Yep. The medals are 1 5/16" bronze pieces that sell for $3.50 each.

Think of the bronze medals as the Poor Man's version, or the luckless version as it may be. I wanted those wildlife medals from a few years ago, but was luckless, not poor. But these new mint products are overpriced and under packaged IMHO.

The Medal has the same obverse and reverse as the gold. The only differences between the medal and the gold is, the medal doesn't have any denomination on it, and the reverse image is larger.

I don't think they're going to do this. For the people who are complaining, they can always buy those medals. I think the mint would say this. If later on in the series fewer people are buying them, they're going to cut the numbers.

The medals are a great inexpensive alternative.

I agree, the mint might cut numbers on some of the later issues. How many William Henry Harrison First Spouse Coins does the mint expect to sell? I don't see that one being a big seller.

What I don't understand is, the mint finally stopped taking orders a few days ago, for their waiting list on the proof coins, but they continue to take orders for the UNC. Its been over 2 weeks since the coins were released. How many people need to be placed on a waiting list, before the mint acknowledges they sold out?

I thought since the president is in base metal and the first lady in gold that they were reserving platinum for the first dog (each will be a limited edition of only 1,000 pieces - but this will only be announced the first day of sale ).

What happens if the First pet is a cat, would it be bimetallic coin.

Maybe they will take subscriptions for a 4 coin set, then on the day of issue, throw that option out the window. Wait, they already did that one.
