A friends got me a $10 gift card to a coin shop near my house. I've been debating what to buy with it adding a little of my own money with it. I want either to get a 1950 d and a 1939 s and d Jefferson nickels or buy some junk silver dimes to add on to my silver Rosie circulated mint date collection. Which one would be a better investment? I tried roll hunting nickels but I'm having a hard time getting the last few I need.

I vote for the Jefferson nickels, since you are "...having a hard time getting the last few...". You can complete (or almost) the nickels and concentrate more on the dimes

I would see what the lcs has and maybe get a nickel and a few dimes but I wouldn't decide till I see which coin or coins jump out in person based on cost, grade, luster, eye appeal and possible varieties

Forget the jeffersons as the dates and mints you want will have you coughing up a lot of your own money. I say go for the circulated roosies. they should be fairly inexpensive now with the price of silver being low. stick with silver; there's always a good chance silver could go through the roof in the future. Whatever you decide go for UNC grades. That may mean you only get one coin. But in the future you'll be glad you did.

I like getting uncirculated grades for the nickels but for the dimes I cherry pick AU dimes out of junk silver piles. It's for a whitman album and most of the later dimes were nice ones pulled out of circulation so I like them matching about grade wise. My dimes I see as a fun silver investment, instead of rolling random dates, I get one from each date and mint mark. I'm getting close to completing it then I can start on the proof dimes.

Do you roll hunt? If you do I';d go for the silver. It is easier to find a Jefferson nickel (unless it is a 1938s ) than to find silver in a box of circulating denominations (dimes and quarters)

I do but I had a bad nickel box that I had a feeling someone else got to me before me. It was unsealed and it looked like someone shoved nickels back in those plastic tubes. For some reason there was $103 in nickels when I returned it which was nice but wasted my time. It just made me annoyed with them for awhile. I found a little bank with over $1,000 in dollars coins that I been slowly searching through. Ike's, SBA, and golden dollars.

The odds of finding a high quality 50D Jeff roll hunting are astronomical. I have not found even an AG example, but have found every other in VF or better. The 50D is a no brainer IMO, provided it is a nice coin at a fair price.

I would rather purchase key, and or semi key Jeffersons in higher grades before I bought junk silver.
