In terms of advice, better options other than USB cameras do exist for very moderate pricing.

I would agree with SD's statement,

...commodity-cheap in far higher pixel densities.

which lends credence to the fact that USBs' shortcomings begin to manifest themselves when attempting to capture the true texture, color, and reflectivity of proof-like coins.

IMO USBs are best for mm close-ups.

Before learning more about other options I dedicated much effort on a CCF thread entitled,

'USB Microscope Photographing coins':

https://goccf.com/t/88598

Although this USB thread with my last post being 11/19/2013 is the 8th most viewed thread in the Coin Photography forum, the number one thread by far is one by rmpsrpms; it touches on various materials & methods to create a custom unit depending upon one's particular situation:

Compare the photos in each thread and then make your own decision; it's a no brainer.

I chose this celestron. It has a 3.5" LCD for field viewing and it has a rechargeable battery. It also goes as low as 4x magnification which I liked. There's an sd card and you just hit a button to take your picture

Ahab8,
can you take a picture of a 2 inch coin and get the entire coin in the shot?

No it will not do that. My coins are found metal detecting and it's great for seeing hard to read dates, die cracks, varieties etc. but you can't see a large coin which is less than desirable. That's the only one thing I don't like as it's got a nice 5 mp camera and other great features

Because of my need to photograph several larger diameter, non-coin type of objects with a USB camera I elected to create a device so lovingly referred to by some CCF members as follows:

'...this mutant you've created is pretty cool.' .

The primary purpose of this thing is to increase the distance between the object-to-be-photographed and the USB while simultaneously allowing significantly greater diameter objects to fit centrally directly under the lens with the aid of the extended spiral-wound goose neck tubing etc...

Keep in mind that this rather unique project which I personally tackled is not for everyone but its completion really fit the bill for my requirements since this contraption does not exist elsewhere else to the best of my knowledge.

The thread is entitled,

'quick/easy focus of any USB microscope w repeatable results'

https://goccf.com/t/109328&whichpag...od,mdpmedia'

I wish anyone the best of luck in their attempt to duplicate this creation or some variation of it.

If another similar or more useful device happens to develop, please post its construction details linking them back to both threads for the benefit of all interested parties using USBs.
