I am really enjoying my newest hobby, but would like to take better pictures of my coin roll hunting finds. I have a HP Officejet 4620 Scanner and a LG Smartphone to work with. When I use my scanner, the pictures come out, but they lack the true color and detail of the coin. Also, I don't know how to have a colored background for the coin, instead I just sit my coins on the glass and scan. Please help this newbie.

Please see my pictures on ebay. My username is 49ers4ever2014.

first,

second,
creating 3 threads that are basically all the same isn't going to help you get the help you are asking for. keep it all in one spot

third,
I would be tempted to ditch the scanner and focus (no pun intended) on using the phone until you have access to a camera.

do a search for "iphone" in this section, READ the advice already available, take & post some pictures, and THEN ask for help tuning up the results.

Scanners cannot depict luster or color very well, but they're good with detail and therefore suffice for technical grading. You don't want a colored background - coins should be shot on a monochromatic background - but with a scanner all you'd have to do is put a sheet of paper of the right color on top of the coin, under the cover. There's your background.

Concentrate on getting your phone parallel and as close to the coin as it can focus. Shoot some shots and post them here, and we'll see what we can do.

Good lighting is arguably the most difficult thing to get right.
And it changes from coin to coin.
Scanners have the problem of you not being able to control the lighting.
Use it only for inexpensive coins.

this is what I use, silverstacker2015. it is a nickel box and picture frame glass. the light reflects off the glass, so no glare back at the lense. any cheap camera that has a macro setting and white balance will do. shine any flashlight horizontally at the glass and shoot from above.

glass at a 45 degree angle. axial lighting. a black cloth liner would probably be even better.
