Someone posted a similar article on the subject. From what I know, it isn't real and there is no governmental talk about it.

There is a good article on the subject in the September 10 Coin World. They are "fantasy" pieces. The "coins" do exist, but they were produced by a private individual basically for his own entertainment ... of course, if they WERE part of an international monetary conspiracy, that's just what they'd want us to believe ... hmmm.

uhhh those designs are Daniel Carr's, I remember him posted the exact same pictures for us to choose which one we liked best Edit: I did some searching and found the links to his posts about these coins I was referring to, the only thing that has changed is the Reverse. Here is his links asking the forum members which design they liked best http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...erty,patternhttp://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...erty,patternEdit #2: I see if I had read the article about those coins they did state that they were made by Daniel Carr, but I am still not convinced that these will be a final design of the coins because he usually does this to see which ones they like (if they like them at all) so just because they say that they are showing the new coin doesn't mean that is the final design the mint will choose (and at this point I am still not 100% convinced this ameros coin is going to actually be a reality). D.C. comes on this forum sometimes and maybe he can shed some more light on these fantasy pieces like who commissioned him to make them with the ameros reverse and if they are still considered a fantasy piece or if they will actual become a reality sometime in the near future

I passed along information about it in "General Discussion."
It's very real in that some people (Govt. elites) would love to see it.
How would you like to be part of Mexico? Lovely thought.

Right now the Daniel Carr coins are novelty pieces. Let's hop that's what they remain.

That radio talk show host (Rob McConnell) is a simple conspiracy theorist. I heard about this story on the news and was seriously laughing out loud when they were talking about this guy's theory regarding the coins. He was claiming that Carr's site was hastily cobbled together by the government and blah blah blah... even though I've been visiting the site for the last couple years or so. Pretty entertaining stuff. You really have to wonder if this guy really believes his delusions or if is just for entertainment purposes.
As far as an actual union is concerned, I understand that some politicians in all three countries are in favor of such a move, but I doubt it will ever happen. Canada is already in a union of sorts (the "Commonwealth of Nations"... is that the correct term?), and no one would want Mexico without Canada to balance out. Beyond North America, plenty of central and south American countries would be willing to sign on I'm sure, since several already use American money as a 2nd currency anyway.
Personally, I'm on board with a unifying currency such as the Euro, although perhaps I'm not aware of potential negative economic impacts. Seems like it would save a lot of money in the long run since there wouldn't be as many currency conversion fees, and would make travel an awful lot easier.
It will definitely be interesting to see if anything develops, but I highly doubt this will extend beyond conjecture.

In the big picture, it probably doesn't matter whether having a unified currency for North America (the Amero) is a good idea or not. For America to get on board, it would have to be approved by politicians. Politicians don't approve things based on whether they are good ideas; they approve things that will help them and their party gain/maintain power. Support of a unified currency in today's environment would not be a "vote getter," so the idea is DOA.
