I have never thought about carrying a coin as a pocket piece before, until I saw it mentioned here a couple of times recently. So I thought "why not" and grabbed this coin and put it in my pocket....
Pocket-Piece

Do many other people carry a pocket piece?

I got a damaged Peace dollar (likely got stuck in a counting machine) that I sometimes carry around, but it's not in a holder. It has toned and is really kind of cool looking.

Kind of a nice piece for a pocket. If you get a hole in your pocket, I'll be there to catch that.

I tote around an old common date Peace dollar. I like the heft of it and the conversation value it has. I like to point out that one does not have to be rich to collect coins, but it sure does help!

I don't believe that a Morgan in an airtite qualifies as a pocket piece. It's more like a "lookie what I got" bragging piece. A pocket piece needs to be a raw coin. The fun is watching it wear down over the years. So, pop out the Morgan and check it evey 6 months for some wear and enjoy the wearing of it down to a silver round.

Good luck.

Pocket pieces come and go....I've been carrying around ratty but interesting coins for the last few months. They're interesting to look at, they jingle, and they gradually wear each other down. I prefer sizes half doller (or half crown) and smaller - the bigger coins clank around and wear out my pockets. I've carried better (but not pristine) coins in a flip in my wallet. For several years I had an 1846-C half eagle in AG-3 that I packed around that way, until I found a dealer who wanted it more than I did....

I have to admit, I struggled with the idea of taking the Morgan out of the Airtite, but just couldn't do it. So I have swapped it for a 1967 Kennedy half dollar raw coin, that I can put my grubby fingers all over.

Aaahh. I feels good.

In the military and law enforcement many carry what are known as challenge coins. I have a collection I give out to Law enforcement officers as I meet them.

Today I met a detective and handed him one. He identified himself as a "Coin collector" and handed me a 1879 Morgan with the instructions to always carry it in my pocket then you will never be broke.

There are coin collectors out there everywhere.

Note in my area near Chicago, Illinois, a pocket piece is usually a snub nosed .38 caliber S&W. Your handle at the left as triggersmob also is an indicator of a similar nature. "Triggers" and "mob"
Should I be worried about my answers?
Nice coin but to big to carry next to a gun.

I carry around a holed 1963 D Franklin half dollar and an Adams P dollar.

Previous pocket pieces were a 1773 Virginia half penny and a copper Roman coin with the emperor Claudius on it.

Do you guys really think it's possible to wear out a pocket piece?

I used to carry an ASE around.

It was around about the time I quit smoking.

I handled it, flipped it, tossed it, rubbed it, all the time.

After about a year, no trace of wear. I put it away.

So what's the real deal, can you really wear out a pocket piece?

I have heard one of the owners of a 1913 Liberty Head Nickel used to carry it around as a pocket piece. Its the lowest graded 1913 Liberty Head Nickel. It is also the only one that looks circulated. So I believe you really can wear out a pocket piece.

Just Carl, although I did own a .38 S&W at one stage, I sold it many years ago. So you are safe for now. LOL
