Treasure hunters in England have unearthed a hoard of over 5,000 coins from the Dark Ages in a farmer's field near Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. One of the largest hoards of Anglo-Saxon coins ever found in Britain, it includes coins from the reigns of Ethelred the Unready (978-1016 AD) and Canute (1016-1035 AD).

Oh wow. that is incredible. My heart can barely take the rush I get from imagining how it would feel finding even one of those, let alone thousands. wow.

Whenever I read of such a horde being found I can never help but picturing the scene;

Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire circa 1036

"I told you a thousand times, Aethelred, to mark that spot good. But no, you are the man you can find it again. No problem you said, never forget the spot you said."
"What should I have done, Philippa, mark it with an X? Now that would have worked just fine. Might as well paint a sign ‘Hey Viking! Money buried here!'"

"You just put a little pebble there, so sure you would find again. The first field mouse that came along probable picked up that little stone and gave it to some mouse floozy for a quick tumble. I told you to put a boulder there!"

"Will you shut your mouth and help me look, woman?"

"OH! What gives you the right to talk like that to me? Am I the one who buried all our money? No, I don't think so! Am I the one that can't remember where I buried it? No, I don't think so! I know one thing though, if you don't find that money you are sleeping in the barn with the other butt ‘till the second coming! My mother gave us that money, you know!"

"Sigh! I'll find it! Just shut up a minute and let me think....."

Remember those times were lawless.
Hoards of gold,silver were buried and then some nice chaps killed the owners and Bobs your uncle hoards buried to be found by metal detectors.
We knew the son of the finder of the Mildenhall treasure all deceased now.
This was £00000's of Roman silver.

The discovery was made during the annual dig on December 21 on rural farmland the group had visited before.

I try to post an entry for each hoard I hear about in my blog, Sonny's Castle Dangerous at http://castledangerous.blogspot.com. But it would be nice to have a Hoards forum here, as I'm sure I don't catch them all. Hoards -- old ones -- seem to come to light several times a year in England.

This will most probably be declared treasure trove so they will not get to keep it but they will be awarded its value. This usually gets split 50/50 between the finder and the landowner (or whatever arrangement they had so the were allowed to detect on the land). This way the treasure should end up in a museum not in a private collection and we can all enjoy it.
