I recently bought this strip of 5 1969 nickel dollars in plastic. Is it a buisiness strike?

Thanks

Can't tell for sure with pics that small, but I don't think they're anything special.

I've seen something like this before. They're business strikes and they were pretty baggy, so I didn't get them. Where did you get yours?

I got it on internet. The fields are clean in general. I saw more 1968 and this is the first one with 69 date I saw. I was not sure if 68 and 69 got the same strike in those plastic bag.

The one I saw has relatively clean fields in general but lots of small contact marks on the bust. I just looked at it quick through the plastic (in-hand) and didn't take a closer look, since they were business strikes. '68s and '69s are plenty (until the RCM gets them all for ARP).

Does it say anywhere on the plastic that it came from the Royal Canadian Mint?

If the rim looks like the one on top I think you can be sure it's a business strike. Non-business strikes have a square rim.

It's written Canada/Canadian on the plastic. The rim is square.

Here is a pic of my PL 1969 for comparison, there is significant obverse Machine Doubling and this is common on nickel dollars of this era.

Did all business strikes have the rounded edge on all nickel dollars. I have a nice 1977 one with a square edge, does this mean its not a business strike?

Not all, only the early ones. The rims became square when they changed the bust. I'll have to check on what year that is, I don't remember.

Edit: it was 1977. It looks like they made the portrait smaller and lower in relief due to striking issues. All my 1968-1972 dollars don't have a full strike on the crown and hair curl above the ear.

So this one is a business strike even with the squared edge? I picked it out of a cheap bin for 1.25$

Sorry but I can't tell for sure from those photos. Maybe not even in-hand since I'm still pretty new to telling apart business strikes and non-business strikes. The only thing I can tell you is that non-business strikes have a shinier and more mirror-like field than business strikes in general. This may not apply to business strike coins struck with fresh dies because those dies are just polished and therefore shiny too.

Tough call from those pics but I think it may be SP.

This information is not really in any catalogue:

The pliofilm strips of 5 coins from 1968 are all business strikes. That is why it is so easy (and cheap) to find a 1968 ICCS MS-65 nickel dollar.

The pliofilm strips of 5 coins from 1969 are scarcer, but are all proof-like strikes. That is why it is so hard (and expensive) to find a 1969 ICCS MS-65 nickel dollar.

Ya sorry all, my pictures leave alot to be desired. I grabbed it because of how clean it looked, like fresh out of a mint roll. The fields are clear except for a couple of scratches in front of queens face and the letters on the reverse look frosted. I didn't think I could go wrong for 1.25$

thats odd, but interesting, ya I guess you never really give that any thought between the 1968s being business strikes and the 1969s proof.

I'll make a note of that in my catalogue. The one I saw was a '68. I didn't get them because I already have a couple of '68s and they were business strikes.
