I have an oppurtunity to buy a rather cleaned looking, worn 1853 SLQ for $18. Is this a good deal?

That should take you to the sold listings on ebay. Compare the condition of the one you're wanting to purchase with some of the ones that have sold, and see what they went for.

I think the 53 arrows and rays quarter and half are the best looking coins of the series.

If the coins you're buying need to be posted here as "urgent," you're doing it wrong.

$18 falls into the bracket of "Who cares if it's too much?" so don't worry about it. If you like the coin, buy the coin.

IMHO, that's a going price for a VG 1853 that's not been harshly cleaned. As neat a one-year type coin as this is, the 1853 is very common. If your goal is to own it long term, for a type set, save your money and buy a VF-30 or better. If your goal is to resell it, save your money on this one. If your goal is to give it as a gift to say a young collector, buy it ... In this case, it's the thought that counts!

Therefore, if for a type set, wait for something better to come along.

[quote wait for something better to come along.[/quote] I agree you can buy a better grade for a little more money but you will be much more pleased with it.

These are common in all grades. So no need to rush into a purchase.

Scratching my head about the 'urgent' plea for a common coin with a potential $18 purchase?

The CCF is all about gaining knowledge as a collector ... humbly suggest that for $18 if you like it then buy it.
