Been looking around on Trade dollars today, and notice that sometimes chop marked coins get detail grades, and sometimes they dont. Especially at PCGS. NGC seem to be consitent in giving detail grades to their dollars.

First I thought it had to do with the amount of marks on the coin, but I can't find a common thread regarding that.

So is it a grade issue? I see AU coins getting details due to one single mark, but MS coins with 5 marks getting a numerical MS grade.

Or does it have to do with eye appeal?

Thanks

Examples:
MS62, one chop mark

AU details, one chop mark

MS62, 5 chop marks

To me it sounds like you are more concerned about the holder then the coin itself...

I don't own anymore Trade dollars, but have both certified & raw Bust 1/2 Dollars and like holding the raw coins, the only reason I don't crack out any of the certified coin is because one in EF45 retails for near 2 grand, and the other certified coins are in older ANACS holders and use them to help grade the raw ones...

Thanks for your reply.
Not really concerned reagarding the holder; I just have never dug deeper into it the issue before today.
Maybe this should be in the TPG section, since it seems to be a TPG thing whether the grade is details or not.

I thought there were some general consensus regarding grading chop marked coins...

You might want to refer to this tread, or ask some of them: https://goccf.com/t/188550&SearchTerms=chopmark
Some of the coins on the thread are graded by PCGS.

The AU details coin, it might have to do with that large, circular dent on the obverse that I don't think is a chopmark, but I'm not sure.

that the details grade (.98 - damage, Any Metal Movement) is from the circular pattern that is on the obverse. I agree with them on that point. If it does not bother the buyer, then it is definitely a buying opportunity, IMHO.
