Hi, I'm a new collector and have been slowly learning about the hobby and have found this site to be a good resource. Thought I would share some images of a penny I recently got and see if it's a DDO as I think it might be. The die chips in liberty and the thicker 1909 date lead me to believe so. What do you think? And I am guessing the vertical lines are from a past cleaning (that's how I received it)? Thanks!

Hi John,
Thanks for the welcome. That looks like a match, thanks for that.
The penny is in an air-tite capsule.

Quote: And I am guessing the vertical lines are from a past cleaning (that's how I received it)? Yes, unfortunately, somebody wrecked it. Aside that it looks a stronger example of the DDO than the plate coin John linked.

Thanks Dave!
I was afraid of that, but I'm not too upset as I only paid 15$ for it. I'll chalk it up as a learning experience.
The penny does look great in hand with luster and the scratches really don't show (at least to my eyes) unless its magnified. Thanks for the reply!

I would be completely unconcerned at $15. $5 for the lesson and $10 for a nice DDO is money well spent.

Looks like you have a winner, too bad someone scrubbed it.....still a good buy for $15!

Thanks guys! To be honest I had no inclination it was a DDO when I bought it, just thought it was a nice VDB penny. Guess I got lucky with the DDO and unlucky with the scratches :)

Thanks Historyfan! Macro photography is another hobby I like. This was just a quick and fast shoot using a Canon 5D2 + Canon MPE macro lens at slightly more than 1x magnification. The 1909 and Liberty shots are crops from the first 2. I just setup on a tripod, shot at F11 and used a small flashlight to illuminate the penny while exposing the shot...while moving the flashlight around the right side of the penny. Opened the raws in Lightroom, set the white balance (used a Whibal card) and resized for the web in photoshop. :)

Holy smoke! Sounds like a lot of work! Got to love it, though.

We have a rather active Photography forum here, and it would be a pretty cool thing if you'd do a thread on shooting with the MP-E. We're generally split between fixed macro lenses and bellows-mounted duplicating lenses. I don't know if anyone's done an MP-E. That sounded like a pretty cool process - did you stack shots, or do it with exposure and a very small light?

& kudos on the VDB. I'm a big copper & error fan...To the wind with the whiz job, this is 2 for 2 in my book.

Thanks for the welcome CopperCastle :)
@Dave, I will check out the photography forum and think about an MP-E thread (I go back to work this week after vacation which will keep me busy so it might be a while).
I shot the penny using aperture F11, and just a bit over 1x mag... that gave me enough DOF for the photos..I used a small handheld flashlight (2 double a batteries) to light the penny, exposure time was 2 seconds or more for the shots. I don't really use stacking for macro shots, but maybe shooting coins will get me to explore that some more as shooting with a larger aperture and stacking can lead to sharper images.
Thanks again for the welcome all.
