Hello and thank you for having this great forum. I am from CA and have just inherited 8 suitcases worth of coins - old MSDs, gold, platinum etc. Never collected before, but keen to learn and educate myself.

Any opinions/help on grading/valuation would be greatly appreciated. Newbie here

to the forum!

First off, let me offer condolences for the passing of whomever left you those coins.

Second, DO NOT clean any of them. This will destroy any value.

I don't collect or posess any knowledge of the coin type you posted, but someone who does will likely come and offer an opinion. A picture of the reverse (back side) will help.

I can say that you have joined the (premier, IMO) coin forum that exists on the Internet, and there are many here who can offer a lot of help and advice on essentially all aspects of coins and collecting.

Edit: If you click on the hyperlink on the word " inherited" in your original post, you will end up at some good advice for those new to collecting who have inherited coins. Please read it, it's very helpful.

We can help if you post pics. The one you posted has what we call a basement slab -- that is one that is made up by an individual and not recognized by the community as legitimate. That doesn't mean the coin does not have value, it just means one can not go by what is written on the slab.

Welcome to the forums.

Thank you, Jim. So should I get them re-graded by a recognized entity?

Shaf2b. If they are all in holders like that, then yes. The holders that are recognized as legitimate will be PCGS, NGC, ICG, and ANACS. Sometimes PCI is acceptable.

There are also Canadian grading services as well if you have Canadian or Newfoundland coins.

First of all

Second of all, fasten your seat belt, you are in for a fun ride.

Yes, by all means, don't clean any of them, and all I can suggest is to not be in a hurry. Take your time with this situation. You will get a lot of excellent advice by the much experienced folks on this site.

Yes, that's a very nice coin in a legitimate slab. A gorgeous one at that.

Welcome!

Take your time and evaluate what you have by posting pics here. We are here to help.

Regrading may or may not help with generic gold like the coin you posted. I can assure you that the 1923 $20 gold pictured is not an MS67. It is probably no better than MS63. It's still worth significant money, but not MS 67 money!

I'd suggest getting a good grading guide and a good price guide to help you.

As previously mentioned do not clean any of these coins to try and "make them look better". It doesn't work and it destroys value.

Are most of these the same types of coins shown? If so, you just inherited a LOT of money. Eight Suitcases full?!?! That last one alone is worth $2000+
