I have a box full of old Canadian pennies, mostly around the 1940-1960 range, and most of them have verdigris on them. I have tried a vinegar bath on some of them, and a toothpick to pick them off, but some of them are very stubborn and will not go. What should I do?

If the green is soft, then acetone (used carefully) will remove it. If it's hard and crusty, then there's probably pitting or corrosion beneath if you are able to pick it off. If the green is just a hazy dull film, then I don't think that there is anything you can do, although I've heard of a product available in the States that seems to work, but I forget them name but is has "verti" as part of the name.

A vinegar bath was not a wise move, it will turn all the bronze coins an odd colour.

BadThad (a long time member here) has a great product, called Verdi-Care...

Just click on the link in his signature for information on that product.

acetone "used carefully" should refer to the fumes. I never would have thought of it, but another post on this subject, had a member use acetone downstairs, go upstairs for a while, then back downstairs to the fumes which apparently overtook them to the point that they almost didnt make it out.

Coin Care Peterbilt Chemical Co. A word of caution though if the green stuff is hard and flaky don't expend too much time and energy. The Coinstar coin counter would be the best place or deposit to your account.
