I found this stashed with some cash from my late grandfather. He was mainly a U.S coin collector and so am I, so this is a bit out of my knowledge realm. I was actually surprised to find it knowing he didn't deal in foreign coins. All I know is it's gold and I think it's from Australia and called a sovereign. That's about all I know. Any extra info and a value would be much appreciated!

I was going to ask to verify the size, since I thought it could have been a half-sovereign. But I see there were no half-sovereigns made in Australia in 1876, so it's definitely a sovereign.

They're a bit under a quarter-ounce of gold. NGC/Krause price guide entry. This coin looks quite well circulated, so I don't think it'll be worth much over bullion value.

In 1887 they redesigned the sovereign slightly; they moved the mintmarks from the obverse (under the portrait) to the reverse (in the ground-line above the date). They also added a flowing tassel to St George's helmet.

Yeah,close to Bullion from a dealer but they go for ridiculous(unsustainable in the long run) $ on ebay here in Aust.,probaly $400 to $500+ on a good day.
