Let's say the Philly mint had minted cents in 1922.

Would it have been possible to tell the difference between the pennies made in Philadelphia and the missing Ds made in Denver? If so, how? And if so, how long do you think it would have taken before people realized that all 1922 cents without a mintmark were not created equal?

I'm guessing that the obverses on the Philly struck cents would be stronger, and the die characteristics would be different.

From 1974 to 1986 The U.S. Mint at West Point produced Lincoln cents with no mint mark.....yet we only collect no mint mark cents as Phillys.....

I guess if we could match a reverse from a no D to a reverse minted in Denver with a non polished mint mark we would be able to distinguish them from Philly cents.....methinks more likely they would not have been noticed for a very long time.

I wonder whether they would be noticed at all.

I doubt it.

How many other "plain" Lincoln cents do we talk about?

I want to know why we make such a fuss over the 22 "plain" cent and nobody give a darn over the 1968, 69 and 70 "plain" nickels

Good marketing on someone's part is all. As I remember it some guy came up with a hoard of 1922 plain cents and spread the news and offered money for them in the papers. Then other papers picked up the 'story' and collectors bought into it. Then dealers paid premium for them. Now here we are spending the rent mony to buy a coin that would better be classified as an error to complete our sets. I am glad someone did not hype the wide AMs the same way.

The "No D's" wouldn't exist if Philly had minted Cents. Denver would never had to have pushed the dies that far.

That is something I did not consider and it makes even more sense.

Why didn't Philadelphia produce cents in 1922? Was there no demand on the east coast or was it something else?

Celticsoul, thanks for the link.

That sure answered my question and I think I'm going to spend some time reading all the other info available at that site.

Hmmm... now there's a project. Let's see if it's possible to tell the difference between a Philly and a West Point penny!

I was reminded by Conder101 yesterday that San Francisco also minted cents, sans mint mark, from 1978 to 1983.
