I have collected various coins for many years with little to no direction. After reading barryg's Proof Barber post yesterday I was inspired to finally jump into a series I have admired for years! Initially I was going to follow his lead and collect a "Proof Set" consisting of a half, quarter and dime of varying years. However, after making my first high-grade Barber purchase I am going to attempt a half only, proof only set of Barbers. All I needed was a little inspiration and direction! Thank you, barryg! Edit: Graded PCGS (OGH) PF64. I should receive the coin in a few days from a David Lawrence auction. If the photos are any indication of how it will look in-hand I will be sending it right back to PCGS ASAP. Here is a photo of my first: Edited by mitchhailey 01/05/2015 12:41 am

If that coin is any indication, this is going to be quite an amazing collection. Good luck.

WHOA!!
That's some coin to start off a set! What's the grade on that beauty?
Edit: That toning is very attractive!

You may have gotten a nice deal if it comes back from a PCGS reconsideration as a PR65 or higher. Edit: heck, the price doubles between PR64 and PR65, then again between PR65 and PR67 (though 67 may not be reached). Please keep us updated because when you get it in hand!

Thank you! This is one of those times when a coin jumps out at you and you just have to pull the trigger. I've looked at Barber halves for a while but, like I said, was shoved over the edge yesterday into collecting them. It looks like there might be an old fingerprint on the top left obverse, and normally that would be a deal breaker for me on a purchase, but I can live with it on this coin when I consider it in it's totality. To me it doesn't take away from the eye appeal. Also, I don't see any hairlines, but that could be do to lighting. So we'll see...

Somebody must have had a bad day at work over at PCGS to only assign her a PR64.
Yep....send her back!

For some reason I thought that all DL coins are submitted to CAC. If I am correct, then if this coin did not CAC it would likely not upgrade. Someone correct me if I am wrong on my first assumption.

Great coin! I'd keep it in the old green holder. We collectors know the difference. I also don't need a CAC bean to tell me this is a rare and beautiful piece.

Only in my dreams do I own a coin like that...just beautiful. So when you "send a coin back" would you remove it from the holder to get a fresh grade, or leave it in?

I'm going to look into the 'ever DL coin is sent to CAC'...I haven't heard that. I guess I don't really care if it gets upgraded.
I personally feel like PCGS is more likely to upgrade a coin out of holder rather than sending it for a reconsideration in the holder. Maybe someone has more experience with PCGS in this area and could add more to the conversation?

I would imagine removing it from holder would make the most sense... at the very least it removes a predisposition to conform to a set value... ideally they should look at each coin in a fresh light, but shoving 64 in front of the might them look for reasons to lower it rather than raise it.

The way the light was directed on the coin obscures the fields, which I will bet are hairlined, hence the 64 grade.

Very nice coin! Proofs are a challenge to grade from static photos so it tough to say if it is worth the resubmission.
