Hello,

I am looking to buy an uncirculated example of a more common IHC, but first I wanted to ask tips about evaluting UNC coins for this series. In general, when grading, I use Photograde, ANA Grading Standards (book), and look at TPGs from ebay and Heritage.

Any specific tips regarding this series? Is there a resource, for example, that describes strike characteristics for years?

Thanks and hope everyone is enjoying the holidays!

Grading from images online is chancy.
You don't know WHAT the seller may have done to the image (think Photoshop).

You can get common date IHC's slabbed at MS-64 (RB or BN) for $100-150 and MS-63 (RB or BN) for under $100.
DON'T go UNC below -63; those coins have problems.

Thanks for the comments. I am still looking at IHCs and have been focusing on slabbed coins. I seem to see a lot of variation in the surface condition of coins in the 62-64 range. Do the TPGs generally overlook minor carbon spotting and even corrosion? Many of these coins seem "rough", by which I mean uneven and spoltchy toning. The real nice ones seem to appear in the 65 range. That, though, is a bit too expensive for me.

Is this a tough series for UNCs or is it just copper in general?

Maybe I just need to keep looking. Any advice out there?

Like any issue, quality in-grade will vary. Those spots, if you're OK with a specific coin, could buy you one that was technically better for the grade aside the carbon. Good-looking specimens are just like any other series, patience is rewarded.

Concentrate on feather tips, diamonds, and the top leaves on the reverse for strike and you're fine. Expect to be able to find full strikes in your price range.

The book cited by Nickle Guy is a good place to start. http://www.indiancent.com/index.php....VLBpf3vnEec
Rick Snow is the preeminent authority on Indian Head cents. This book provides an overview of the series.
