Maybe this is a question for the moderators since they might have access to the data. I am curious how many lurkers are there that never/rarely comment, compared to active site participants? The reason I'm asking is that sometimes I'll see a thread started with a fairly easy topic or question, and it will get lots of views before anyone actually posts. I just find that interesting.

As of right now, there are 159 registered Members reading the forum, and 509 lurkers. Another 1300 are browsing other areas of this site (if you guys haven't started clicking some of the links all over the place, do - you have no idea how much information is stuffed into this website). This is listed at the bottom of the front page of the Forum, and available to anyone I think.

You can expect reads to outnumber posts in a given thread by about 10 to 1. I'm guessing at least half of those reads are from folks who haven't and might never post at CCF.

I often open topics that catch my attention. If I can, I reply to it. If I'm unfamiliar with what's being asked, not interested in replying, or simply don't know what to say, I don't reply. I think that's where most views without replies come from.

Not to mention the reads from unregistered lurkers.

If I am typical, I agree that the post to read ratio would be something like 1 : 10.

This forum can viewed by anyone on the internet. I remember I was a lurker on this site for about a year until I decided to join. that being said, it does not surprise me that the read/post ratio is where it is.

I read it for about a week before I joined. I needed something to convince my dad to let me withdraw $500.00 in halves, and the half CRH thread did the trick. I registered to post that I was skunked on my first box.

I too think most people are simply not interested in getting involved in a coin forum or almost anything. Yes they would like to read what others are saying but even if they don't agree, they just don't say so. This is a shame too since the more people that contribute opinions, the more others can and will learn. And although many that do reply to a post may not be in agreement with some or all of what is being said, they are the ones that may be correct. I actually would like to see the statistics reversed so possibly 9 out of 10 people would reply. Of course that could get messy.
I used to belong to the PCGS forum. With so many thousands of members and so many do reply to posts, when and if I would try to say something, it would just get buried with additional replies. And to ask a question, before it could get a true reply the replies that did come up had so little to do with the original post. Guess that is why I'm here.

I'm the same way... If I feel that I can add something to the discussion then I will add my opinion... If not, then I don't... Besides there are more experienced people on here that collect coins so I don't want to pass on misinformation to someone new...

I talked a fellow coin geek I work with into registering so I could troll his posts. He officially registered about 2-3 weeks ago but has yet to post....

You'll know when he does because I intend to poke fun at him a great deal.

I search Google frequently looking up coins, and this forum pops up quite a bit in the search results. There is an immense amount of information here. I have read posts from years ago from some of my Google searches. I'm sure that many people just wander here while surfing.

We know the lurkers are here. They're why we're here, to teach them, the next generation of numismatists. We'd prefer they register and join the conversation but we know half the readership, half the total audience, probably never will. That's fine.

Hey thanks for all the comments, very interesting. Like was said, a lot of people just don't want to get involved. There seems to be just about the right amount of people here to have a decent discussion, as somebody also just mentioned.

I think it can sometimes take a bit before people feel comfortable posting on this type of forum. Even though people are super friendly and very helpful here, people sometimes worry about asking "dumb questions" or unsure how to ask a question. I have seen some forums (some coin-related and some non coin-related) where members love to point out somebody's lack of knowledge and sometimes have a self-righteous attitude so many people take time to realize how welcoming this forum is and then they finally join and become members. Overall I have to say that I have met some of the most generous, kind, knowledgeable, and genuinely helpful people on this site.

Lurkers sounds so creepy. I registered about six months ago and only recently joined in the posts as I had unanswered questions. Everyone seeks out the information they want differently. I have read some forums on some American coinage and have not joined in as I don't know very much about the American stuff, but by reading I am still learning. I have found some opinions to be wrong in my mind and some opinions I never would have considered as possibly correct. I have butted heads with SsuperDdave in the joke forum and posted with other collectors on the other side of the country. I really like giving my 2 bits if I have any to give. I have learned alot in a short time already on this site. 2015 is going to be great...IMO.

I do most of my viewing on my iphone. If an intriguing question or mystery coin comes up, I will go back and froth between browser windows, and the page will often reload. I might add 3, 7, 18 "views" to a thread before I post, if I post at all. I'm probably not the only one.

It's our focus on newer collectors and YN's which governs our strict G-rating across all fora, probably a stricter standard than any other forum you guys may belong to. It's in our published Rules - if you wouldn't want your 10 year old little girl hearing it, it doesn't belong here. We want the most comfortable environment possible, considering for some this is their first online community.
