Hard to see it but there is a tiny pockmark on tip of nose.

One of these days I will be able to identify these as cleaned... cleaned obviously makes it a problem coin, but in terms of mercuries does it make them worth melt at that point?

If it is a key date such as the 16-D, than no, way more than melt even at EF details. If it is this 1942, yes, its about worth its melt value.

Learning to spot cleaned coins will take practice and time.

Look at the obverse with a loop if you one. Specifically on the cap right above the wing and to the left of the portrait. Also right through the date. You will see the hairlines/scratchs from a fairly harsh cleaning. The are very prominent

A lot of those lines you see I attribute to die polishing.
The ones in the date area are a prime example.
BUT
The lines on the cap have me a bit bothered.
