Hello I have been having trouble finding information on how Kennedy half dollars are graded. I have many that I have found that seem like they would bring a high grade, but I'm noticing that Kennedy's rarely get over a MS67 grade. Are Kennedy's graded more conservative than other coins? It sure seems that way to me. I also see MS 66 and 67 Kennedy's with scratches dings all over them and ugly toning. What are the specific areas on a Kennedy that pro graders look to when determining how they will grade a Kennedy. Do the earlier dated Kennedy's have to be toned to get a high grade? If anybody is a Kennedy collector or if anybody specializes or has info on this coin please help me understand what I need to look for if I plan on submitting coins to be graded. And what are the years you would be looking for? I have many coins early and later dates that "appear" to be much nicer than the actual graded coins, so what am I missing as to why these scratched, dinged, splotchy coins are getting high MS grades? Sry for asking so many question Thanks

Hey John and thanks for the reply, but I've already seen that before and makes it even more confusing. Are there any other links that go into great detail about grading specifically Kennedy's?

The reason you're not seeing higher-graded Kennedys is because there aren't that many. The Mint isn't on its' best game with Business Strikes, and the coins minted aren't handled with much care. High grade Modern Business Strikes (68 and better) are pretty scarce animals across the board from, say, 1965-2000.

I don't know much about Kennedys but general grading principles apply to all coins.
1) eye appeal - does it flash and catch the eye 2) luster - original mint bloom 3) hits/distractions, especially in the fields 4) strike
Don't over analyze small flaws, especially in this day and age of high resolution. Pictures give you a rough approximation and nothing more. To get the high grades the coin has to have the "look" IN HAND.

Thanks for the replies I've looked at several examples of ms67 and 68 and can't believe some make that grade or even close, then when I see some lower graded ones they look better. I swear I have some that could make ms 68 but they don't like to give that grade it seems, and they are non existent in ms 69 or higher. I just don't understand how there could never be a MS70 Kennedy. It's like they have their mind made up that no Kennedy will ever get MS 70.
