OK, I can see ANACS screw-up on identifying this coin, but, does Heritage even look at the coins they auction off?

Obviously, this coin is NOT an 1845-o

I've seen a couple mislabeled slabs, clearly it's "43".

I can see where aged eyes could make that mistake....maybe it is a rare 1845 over 1843 overdate. LOL

Administrative mistakes happen but yeah, making it through two high-end handlers is a headscratcher.

The unique Dupont 1866 no motto quarter went through four (including NGC, which didn't recognize it) before it was recognized.

I don't think it is the grader's responsibility to check the designation(s). From what I saw in those videos by NGC and PCGS about their grading processes, if they are accurate, the graders only look at the condition and enter the information to the coin in the system which has them already designated.

What boggles my mind is that we CCF members insist that certain coins be certified by ONLY CCF/NCG/ANACS
and that these are the same companies being called to fault for mistakes.
I pity the new comers to collecting.

My faith in TPGs grows fainter and fainter day by day ...

IF you turn an S sideways and close the two loops, separate the middle of the S, you may get the CC.

It would have to be an 1843 over 1845 to make it look like that. This would mean someone in the Mint knew what coins in 1845 would look like.

I've emailed the webmaster @ heritage over something similar (it was actually listed as the wrong YEAR) & the listing was altered pretty quickly. I also received a "Thank You".

I've seen this "production line mentality" in effect for a good many years now, and any of us is capable of falling prey to it. For fun, I used to take a rare error coin in a simple flip to show knowledgeable error dealers. Inevitably, they'd not give it a second glance, saying that they sell these for $5 apiece. When I'd then draw their attention to what they weren't seeing, they'd want to buy it. The lesson here is that most any coin deserves scrutiny; and, don't buy the slab.

Well said Exo. I'm in the process of looking for a small silver neck-chain for my loupe. I've been carrying it in my pocket but I've noticed lint working it's way in between the rims of the lens.
