I have this crisp note from my father's collection (any crap you see is on the plastic cover although there is one pinhole in the note) and I'm not sure if it's common or scarce. I've seen one go for close to $200 in similar condition on ebay. Any help would be...helpful. Thanks.

It's Pick 96, a or b, which is 14.1.1964 or 25.7.1964, respectively. Both have the Carli/Ripa signatures, as does yours. 96b is worth nearly double the 96a, so you want to find the issue date, I can't see it on the photos. The pinhole will knock a few bucks off, they are common with earlier notes, less so in the 1960s and later. $200 is what an UNC note will go for. Yours looks to be About Unc, if I'm seeing a paperclip indent or counting bends in the NW corner.
If it's in plastic, get it out of the holder and into a mylar holder. You can get some at about any coin shop, the 5x8 are the ideal size for most notes.
Good find.

Thanks paxbrit. Actually it is in a mylar holder I bought at a coin shop. Here's the line on the back. It doesn't have an exact date. Unless it's in italian. Thanks again.

That's Italian, all right! It's referring to the laws permitting the issuance of the currency, the decrees minuted January 14, 1964, and June 28, 1962.
The issue date is January 14, 1964, so you have a Pick 96a, still a nice note, my out-of-date catalog shows it at $80 in UNC, with 96b at $150.

Your banknote is quite uncommon. I see a pinhole close to the issue date and a little spot over the number 1000 in the back. You say that it is crisp. According to me, it is worth about 100 euros.

Thanks afornaini. Found it tucked away in my Dad's collection. The spot over the 1000 is on the plastic sleeve. So if I were to sell it where would be the best market? ebay? Again, thanks.

There's a thing to say, first. Usually, note collectors don't collect every issue (every decree) of the same note. Mille Lire with Carli / Ripa signatures were issued four times in 1962, 1963 and 1964 (two times). 1962 issue is the most common and the less expensive to get, even in highest grades. It often happens that, on auctions, notes like yours are unsold, or on online auction are sold for less than their fair value. Demand on this note is not very high. If you put it on an online auction in Usa or Canada, in my opinion, you shouldn't get more than 60 - 70 $. To have a better chance to sell it, you should post your auction on ebay.it. But I think that shipping costs and custom duties may prevent a lot of persons from making their offers.

That makes so much sense. Canada Post charges 39.99 to send a trackable packet. I wouldn't risk sending it without tracking. Not if someone pays over $100. But then why would they pay that much if the postage and the customs add up to an almost equal amount. It's a beautiful note. Thanks so much for the information afornaini.
