Now I've read you shouldn't dump where you buy...and it sounds like most banks require you to have an account to buy coins from them correct?

Where I live we mainly have small local banks. Do most of you buy from large banks, regional, or small banks?

I asked my mother about buying some from her bank and she said most of the tellers buy the silver as soon as they take it in. Anyways just wondering how a newbie should go about getting into CRH. I understand you have to have a little luck as well.

It may be different in Canada where I am but I don't have to have an account to walk into a bank and ask for some rolls of change, it is simply a cash transaction. I have found the opposite as most banks want you to have an account when dropping change off and it must be rolled. Even the coin machines at the TD bank require an account or they will charge you 8% I believe to use the machines to dump change.

Small town against large city may also be alot different. Where I live in a large city there are banks everywhere, sometimes three on a city block. I think tellers are allowed to be coin collectors too, which may be unfair.
Rest in Peace

A phone call to any of the banks you might use will usually save you some time in finding out what they require as far as buying/selling change. In my small mid-western town I can go to any of the three banks in town (population here under 5000) and get whatever I ask for. There isn't a lot of 'turn-over' on change here, since the retail stores are fairly limited in size. However, if I drive 30 miles to the "big city" almost all banks require an account to buy or sell change.

If it's in box you order, the tellers wont go through the box, only the loose stuff they see on a transactional basis.

There's a lot of tips in the CRH section, use the search. Just be very nice to the banks/tellers. Size of the bank does not really matter from what I've read/experienced.

I belong to a small bank,6 or 7 branches. I dump at a different bank. I CRH cents so I am not looking for silver. It's all just luck as to what you find. Good luck on your hunting.

Similar to others - small bank with 4 locations. Some locations turn coin but others cannot. Work with a bank manager to establish picks and drops. Normally they line me up with tellers to do the exchange. I time my picks and drops to suit their schedules. I don't want to be a burden. That said I pick and drop at the same bank. No issues with getting my dumped coins. Neatly wrap (fresh wrappers) all coin and be sure on your counts. I err on the high side if there's any doubt. Be friendly and courteous. Let other customers go ahead as practical if you anticipate a delay (if you are waiting on a vault timer for instance). If policy permits bring them homemade snacks. Learn their names and talk to them - anything that interests them. Establish rapport.

And have fun!

1. Never dumps coins where you buy. You DO NOT want to make the tellers mad, or they might refuse to let you buy there.

2. Yes, you must have an account to buy coins at the bank.

3. I'm not sure that all tellers know that there is silver in halves. (For ex. A couple days ago I went to the bank to dump some halves. The teller had no idea! He asked me where I got these from and I played dumb and said I collected them over the years. Most tellers don't even know you can get them at the bank.)

4.If you can afford box of halves ($500) I would start there. Halves are usually worth the most if you find something good. Prices-7-8 dollars for a 90% and 3-4 dollars for a 40%.

Hope this helped. Good Luck!

Ohh, ya-I would try to find the smallest bank you can with a coin counter and that supplies halves. Some of the really small banks don't carry halves, but some of the bigger banks can be a pain to go to with large lines, and orders will take longer to receive if more people go there.
