Was thinking of starting a franklin set as a side project while working on my mercury's.

Should I do circulated, AU, MS? This is mostly for me, but if I'm having to buy individual coins, or buy larger numbers and sort through them, is there a sweet spot in value?

I noticed a lot of MS63 go for $15-30 on ebay, or I could get a bag of AU on APMEX @ ~ 8.50 a coin avg and probably end up with a set that way + some silver to stack.

Thanks for any input!

AU for 8.50 doesn't sound bad, especially with their free shipping promo. If you're doing junk silver, you could probably do it for closer to 7/coin.

I am not too attracted to Franklins unless they're high grade. Well I just think the difference is incredible. I only have the 63 & 63-D which I got for around $10 each. They're UNC and would probably land in the MS-63 area. Fantastic start.

I guess what I'm trying to say, is if you have the money and patience, put together an MS set. If you can find bargains, even better.

Yeah I guess that is what I am weighing... A set of MS63 would cost 600+/- to build I figure, for $1600 I could most likely build 1 set in AU, and then have 160ish coins to stack at melt. This early in my collecting I do like going through a bunch of coins, discovering, so I am leaning that direction.

That is true. I have about a year under my belt and learned that its not so much about how many coins you have, it's the quality of the ones. So that's why going forward I'm working on buying nicer coins.

Although if your motive is stacking, then go for the junk silver. It's going for about 13.5x face value now I think,.

Why do you think you will end up with a set from an APMEX bag? Probably won't get 1949s, 1952s, 1955, etc

Im going by the "close enough" assumption based on some feedback, and the fact that there arent any super key dates. I understand there is a chance I would still have to purchase a few, or worse case more, but that is part of the fun in going through unknown rolls/bags :)

Note: This doesn't extend to CRHing for me :P I got burned out on that fast after multiple skunks.. maybe again sometime soon.

It would suck if they were all 1963. I got to warn you looking through junk boxes of franklins at dealers I say 60% are 1960-1963. They have the older dates for the same price but you just won't see as many in a random grouping do to the mintages. They might not have any that are rare but you are more likely to find certain dates than others just like anything else. Does sound fun going through piles of them, I just prefer not to buy them first haha.

I think you should try to get your set in MS coins, you can get all of them in MS fairly cheap and it will look much better than circulated set.

a MS set of Franklins would be cost effective to put together. My set is AU and was very "plain" looking so I bought a new album and adding the proofs. It is looking much better now.

I just started a set Ihad bought a few off of ebay ms63 fbl and a couple ms64fbl they were commons of course but the 63fbl was $15 and the 64's were 22-25. I wanted a Fbl set except for the 53-s but...

My LCS had some mint sets walk in that were in a whitman book. They were 54-69 unc mint sets.

A complete Mint State set in MS64 is a nice compromise between quality and value.

Best Regards,

The prices people are getting these at, are these slabbed MS64 or just appearance MS64?

Sorry for bumping the thread but had another question.. Should I stay away from the Proofs in the later years? It looks like they are less valued than MS coins, I'm guessing due to the number produced? If I'm going for a MS set, stick with MS?

Thanks.

I don't no about you, but I'm OCD about a lot of things, and one of those is coin collecting. If I were to have a bunch of MS coins and then a some proofs at the end, I would immediately buy MS versions of the proofs. Whenever I'd look at the set, the proofs would always bother me. That is just me though, if it were my choice, I'd just go with a full set of MS and keep the proofs off to the side.
