Hey all, I don't normally post in this section, as I mostly collect Canadian coins.

However I enjoy pennies, and I have the opportunity to buy a lot of Aussie pennies.

The seller was advertising this as her 2-up pennys, she has 550 and she told me they were all large cents, not the small cents.

I have no idea the dates, or the conditions, however if these were used as game pieces I can imagine they may be banged up, and certainly not high grade.

that all being said she is asking $100 for the lot (roughly 18 cents per coin)

If these were Canadian pennies, I would not even bat an eye I would buy them in a second, however 550 coins of a foreign country with little or no market to resell in my area causes me a rethink the purchase.

I asked if she would sell a part of the lot and if she was willing to negotiate the price, but she wants to sell them all at once, and firm on the price.

How banged up do you think these coins could be? any dates or specific coins I should be looking for?

Should I or should I pass?

Thanks

You should be looking for 1925, 1946 and 1930 pennies (very rare). These are the key dates. $100 for 550 pennies seems a fair price to me and should give you some fun chasing these scarcer dates.

Yeah, you can also add 1931 & 33 overdate to that list,1919 Double Dot($50+) & 1920 double dot($25+) are also rare & worth money.Very hard to get a key date or rare coin in a bulk buy these days,so easy for even novices to check on the Internet for value, but there is always the thrill of the chase and you never know what may have been missed if you have the time to examine each coin.

In addition to Spider and Basil there is something else here.

2-up is a gambling game that became popular with Australian Diggers, and everyone else , in the early part of last century. It was outlawed except for licensed Casinos and one day a year. That day is April 25th, ANZAC day, where it is now a tradition to play it in all it's glory. $20 Heads bet anyone.....

The game is played by the "spinner" tossing 2 coins up in the air off a flat piece of wood and people betting on either 2 heads or 2 tails showing when they hit the ground. (Modern games use 3 coins to remove the split head/tail case).

While any coins could be used, it is usually tradition to play with King George pennies.

These days you can buy novelty 2-up sets that have reproduction coins, however the real thing is sought after as well. This may be an option for you as well.

Cheers
Peter
