I just got $892 in change from a friend at work who has been dumping into a jar for years. This is a lot to go through, what should I be looking for on my first pass? Dimes, nickels, quarters, and like $100 in pennies.

I was thinking of starting a set of some modern pennies/dimes/etc but I'm guessing these will be too circulated to bother doing that with.

Thanks!

dimes / quarters (if checking for silver) is easiest. turn so rim is showing and if solid silver color , it is silver ( a brownish-clad and half silver color will be on clad) nickels is not my expertise area , for pennies I would sort for copper ones then from there thin those into LWC then LMC .. etc. not sure if you save copper or not but a good way to cut zinc out (not sure if you want to take time to sift through 10,000 pennies for errors though)

Heh true, unless there were some really good years.

Looks like 1480 quarters, 1440 nickels, 7950 pennies, and 2700 dimes

2700 dimes done, Two silver roosevelts and a newer canadian dime. That is actually amazing for me since I went through box after box of bank dimes with no silver.

Funny you mention this, I went through a relative's change jar with two THOUSAND dollars (15 years worth) and found the following:

3 silver dimes
A War Nickel
LOTS of pre 1960 nickels
1938 nickel in BU condition
Lots of wheat cents, including a steel penny
1892 IHC
And a few foreign coins

I got to keep the old coins and some uncirculated State Quarters as a way of thanking me for sorting out the change
