Yeah, I bought a bunch from craigslist, but I mainly just buy collections. I scored a couple GSA Morgans, a 1872 Seated dollar, and a UNC 1834 Half Dollar, plus a ton of lower grade extra stuff. But, I usually pay far below actual vaule, because they are raw, the I send to Pcgs and see how I did. You got a nice haul! |

Can you qualify those purchases? Were they good deals? Bad deals? Smooth transactions? What was the largest/best of the year? I know of some transactions (non-numismatic) that have gone wrong.

Thanks for the comments. I've been buying off CL for many years, and I'm always aware of my surroundings & always meet in safe places. I've made some acquaintances with folks that buy and sell. Here in Texas we are allowed to have a concealed handgun, and I always carry. You can never be too careful. I don't weigh my coins, I just count them. according to a article I read in Numismatic News, I'm more of a accumulator? I love looking through my coins for rare dates, but they are hard to come by for certain. This past year I actually found 3 1922-d Lincoln cents. In all my 40 years of collecting, I'd never found a wheat this rare. I did purchase a complete set of early Lincolns about 7 years back, with all the keys, for $400. If you think I underpaid, I did, but I didn't know if the keys were authentic either, when I purchased. I've have found several 1932-d Washington quarters, several 1938-d w.l. halves. The price of silver has dropped a lot last year, so some of my early purchases I'm in the red, but it will come back up. I rarely sell, these will remain in my collection. Edited by thecoinguy1964

Right on! Piles of silver like that are certainly something to behold. I've bought and sold "junk" silver on Craigslist for years. I always carry (in WA its concealed or open carry but I always conceal) and meet in a public place.
I've had one bad experience where two guys thought we were meeting in one place when I thought it was another a couple miles away. The guy's buddy started getting lippy in the background so I left and sold that silver to someone else. I also met in a bank lobby once to sell a number of silver eagles and junk. A customer who happened to be in line noticed me selling the silver and stated that he had 'bags of that stuff' from his deceased father and asked if I would appraise it for him. He offered to pay me however I declined payment (since this gentleman was suffering from a severe illness) and met him a couple days later to appraise his collection (mostly junk silver). Who knows what can come out of a craigslist sale! I have noticed lately, however, at least in my area, not too many are buying when I offer gold buffalos or silver eagles.

I never see much on craigslist in my area... either people know what they have, and want 20% higher than ebay prices, or they dont know what they have so they dont even post it :P |

`It's more misses than hits, but you have to beat the bushes. I get a lot of folks with one 1956 Wheat penny & a 1964 nickel, and they think they're worth a mint, or the individuals that think Buffalo nickels without dates are valuable. I just came home with 32 w.l. halves, that I paid $6 each for. |

Apparently Craigslist coin offerings are much better in Texas than Upstate NY. Listings I see fall in one of two categories.....Overpriced crap or "dealers" trying to buy WAY under value.....

The idea of carrying firearms frightens me.
I have never had to consider even in the slighest sense, a threat to personal security where the possibility of firearms may be involved.
Some simple common sense in deciding a meeting place and an awareness is all that should be required, irrespective of if you are buying / selling coins or bananas, or whatever else.
