Oh, this sounds really exciting! I would like to see John A. on a loonie maybe - a quarter doesn't seem important enough for him. Let's just hope that this commemorative doesn't turn out like the Washington quarter, and stay in use forever.

Yup - I found a press release that it is a toonie.
Thanks for the link. It has a decent description. "The coin design will feature a portrait of Sir John A. Macdonald with a map of Canada in the background."

Quote: and the inscriptions "CANADA" and "2 DOLLARS" appearing on the edge of the coin, with a maple leaf before and after the word "CANADA". Blah thats disappointing, I guess more of the same "waffle" damaged toonies. I wish they would get rid of that edging machine or get a better one if they must put letters on the edge.

It's also mentioned in this thread: https://goccf.com/t/193074 with the edge lettering. If coins have been using edge lettering for at least a couple hundred years, by now they should have the technology to make edge lettering without "waffling" the rim.

You would think so, but sounds like a Canadian Corporation to spend a lot of money on something that doesn't work properly. Give us back our unwaffled Toonies! I hate even looking at them now because I know what I am going to see.

200th anniversary of something makes sense to go on a toonie.
Missed out a good War of 1812 200th anniversary in August 2014, lol. Of course, our friends to the South wouldn't have been impressed...

I'm wondering how many can be bought in Ktown on sunday when you show up. Will the strike be different than those put into circulation?

Yeah I'm pretty sure a toonie commemorating the burning of the White House would have been a good idea. Hard to say what will happen at the exchange. Sometimes there are limits (usually 5 per person) and sometimes they will exchange as many as you like. That said, they will likely be no better or worse strikes than the coins that go into circulation. I wonder if there will be a collector card available.

It says FREE SHIPPING in red, next to "Sir John" to the left.
