Here is proof positive that some folks should *not* be allowed to handle coins and tools at the same time. DDDDDDDDD: It looks to have been a really nice specimen prior to 1857. I paid ten bucks for it, well,,, just because.

Quote: Why 1857 ? Punched into the top of the obverse. This thing is cool. I'm looking into what Dahlonega's punches looked like this year.

That's awesome! I wish I had this in my collection. There are some people who collect counterstamps.

That was,IMHO, a great buy for $10. I don't normally collect counterstamps, but the fact that it's a contemporary counterstamp makes it way cool. Quote: I'm looking into what Dahlonega's punches looked like this year. That would be cool if a connection could be made.

I don't think there's a match - $5 was their biggest issue that year. Still quite cool as a contemporary piece of overkill.

In my mid-teens I would put tiny pockmarks in common circulating Lincoln pennies to see if any would ever find their way back home via my mom's grocery shopping change, which I always went through carefully. If they were no longer spendable, that may account for the torture this poor coin endured.

They likely continued to circulate but were gradually plucked from circulation by collectors and others wanting examples of the obsolete coins. The only coin ever demonetized was the Trade dollar but it was re-monetized by the Coinage Act of 1965. -MV

Large cents weren't circulating by 1857, that's one of the reasons the mint switched to small cents. The few that did circulate did so until the Civil War when all coins were hoarded North and South. After the war Indian Heads were so popular that large cents never found their way back into circulation.
