Hello again folks, yet again I require your expert opinions on this coin which I am fairly sure is some sort of copy. I have found very similar almost exact types but the weight of this one is half of what I think it should be. Weight = 13.17g Diameter = 33.5mm approx. As Nero coins are fairly rare I fully expect this to be a fake, unless I have been searching the wrong denomination I think the weight is way off. Your opinions are greatly appreciated. P.S I forgot to mention that someone had put a modern stamp on both sides of the coin which surely wouldn't be done on a genuine coin, would it ? Edited by tenbobbit 01/11/2015 5:44 pm

The WRL is a giveaway, it stands for Westair Reproductions Limited. Sorry.

As others have said, whenever you see "WRL" stamped into an ancient or mediaeval coin, you know you've got a base-metal replica. They are sold by museums and other history-tourism places, particularly in Britain, for a few pounds each. They usually are sold in a little cardboard holder telling you all about the coin it's copied from and making it clear it's a replica, but once removed from the wrapper, the WRL mark is the only indicator of its origin.
Do a forum search for "WRL" and you will find many, many more of their products.

Would not call it a fake but rather a well labelled modern copy.

Thought so although I was unaware of the WRL stamp bit. Fortunately it wasn't " purchased " but given so no cost incurred this time. Great info again folks, greatly appreciated.

Besides the WRL, it just looks grainy and probably underweight.

Hi Vermont Yes it looked and felt wrong not to mention half its proper weight plus it sounded like a modern piece but just to be safe I thought I would ask. I do enjoy this part of the forum and 1 day I will buy a nice " keeper for life " coin, until then I will just enjoy the history lessons. 1 more question folks, which site/s would you advise me to use if I was to make a purchase of a reasonable amount ( £200-£300 ) I would like something nice. Thanks again

I collect 'WRL' copies as a somewhat interesting sideline. Most of mine have come out of dealers' junk boxes.

Most of my purchases that large I buy from local brick-and-mortar dealers or coin shows - I prefer to see in person and don't want to risk losing something that valuable in the post. That being said, I have bought a few ancients and mediaevals from some American dealers. I've been a repeat customer of FORVM and Civitas Galleries. I can also recommend the dealers on Vcoins.

I'll also vouch for Civitas and FORVM. I've bought from both several times and never been disappointed.

I always hesitate to make dealer recommendations but I have in the past pointed 'newbies' to Lucernae out of Spain. Many of his coins have a very satisfactory amount of 'dirt' remaining on them which while not a guarantee of authenticity is usually a good indicator. He has a vast inventory and sells hundreds of coins weekly via ebay. With some patience and selective bidding you might get a great deal on a nice 'fat' coin of the type you have pictured here. He also seems to be one 'hell of' a nice guy who remembers his customers !

One of my favorite Vcoins dealers is Zuzim , he offers very high quality coins for fairly "cheap" prices. He specializes in "biblical" and Roman coinage.

Many thanks for all your suggestions folks There are a lot of very nice coins on the sites you have suggested, now I just need to narrow down exactly what it is that I want. Kid in a sweetshop scenario Sel, if you don't have this 1 in your collection you can consider it yours. Just need to figure out how to get it to you, if you ever do a trade with the UK let me know and I will post it to your trade partner. Thanks again everyone.
