Hey everyone. I put up an ad on Kijiji saying I would like to be old coins. Someone wrote back and seemed eager to sell their collection. They put together a spreadsheet of hundreds of coins and a few bills. They came up with their own prices and definitely put some work into organizing it.

I went over to see the coins and when I made friendly conversation like "Oh, that's a nice coin, what year is that one?" He would say: "It's on the spreadsheet!" Actually, he answered every question I had with: "It's on the spreadsheet!!" I told him I would buy all the silver coins right now and he said to send him an email and he would think about it. I told him I would buy all the French and German coins and give him cash right now but he seemed unwilling to negotiate.
When I went home, I went through the spreadsheet and sent him an offer based on what the coins are selling for in today's market. I had to see them before I could get an idea of the grade. As you can imagine, I haven't heard back. Has anything like that happened to anyone else? Was he in need of money, or do you think he just wanted them appraised?

That would not surprise me in the least.

He probably thought that you were just going to try and talk him down on every coin. If he went to that much effort to catalog all the coins into a spreadsheet, he probably did his due dilligence as far as pricing. So it sounds like he made up his mind that he was not going to be talked down, so he thought you were asking about each coin like " I know what it says on the spreadsheet, but what will you really sell it to me for?" Hence his reply of " It's on the spreadsheet.

I have had this happen on numerous occasions. Some people incorporate a little negotiating room into their asking prices, and some just don't. And of course you always run into those who think that just because they saw a silver coin on TV for $150, that every silver coin is worth $150 and there is no reasoning with them.

It is what makes places like craigslist always interesting.

Denco7, that's true. When I went home, I sent him an email agreeing to his asking price on about half of the coins since they were in the ball park. On the other half, I made a reasonable offer based on what they normally go for. For example, he wanted $2.50 for junk silver dimes from the 1960's and there's no way I could go over spot price. I was hoping that by agreeing to his asking prices for half of the coins, it would leave room to make a reasonable offer on the silver dimes.

He does not want, or perhaps know how to negotiate,
but just wants to sell items at his own nominated (high?) pricing.

I have met owners of old cars like that.

Not sure where you live but going to someone's place to buy coins would mean you are carrying money. Also, I hope you did not give him your real name and address. Whoever he is or whatever he wants, it all sounds a bit odd. I'd be more careful making such deals. If it was me I'd have suggested meeting in a public place such as a mall or something like that. Meeting someone and having a lot of money with you is not to smart.

Thanks Just Carl. I agree that you should be careful. I had my girlfriend with me. I would have never gone there alone. It definitely sounds odd. My girlfriend is convinced that he's in debt because he had crappy furniture in his living room and his wife wasn't friendly. She barely said "hello".

UPDATE: He emailed back saying he'll pass because silver prices might go up in a year. It's frustrating because I don't think he understands that most people aren't paying 10 to 1 for junk silver.
