Thanks for posting that Bobby.

So perhaps I should touch on what got me interested in bringing this rather old thread back to life. I've recently decided to take the plunge into working on a collection of circulated coins from the New Orleans mint. I find it interesting that quite a few coins from the 1840s and 1850s have very low survival estimates yet are quite affordable. Of course there are some real show stoppers in this mission such as the 1853-O No Arrows Half Dollar (mintage of 4 coins) but there are so many great coins in this series that I'm going to give it a shot. For now I'm going to just focus on Seated Liberty coinage from New Orleans but may later expand things to include Morgans and Barbers, oh and perhaps even gold, but that will likely be way down the line

Curious, has anyone else here taken a shot at working to put together a set of all New Orleans minted coinage?

Here's a list of what's in store (taken from the PCGS registry page).

Quote:
New Orleans! Home to Creole cooking, Mardi Gras, jazz, and some of the greatest coins in the world. The New Orleans Mint operated from 1838 to 1909, supplying silver and gold coins to support the commerce generated by one of America's most important ports. This massive set is replete with rarities and coins that are hard to locate in high grades. Thus, it is not for the faint-of-heart or the poor-of-pocket. Coins like the 1856-O Double Eagle, the 1883-O $10, and the 1853-O No Arrows Half Dollar represent the pinnacle of American coin collecting, but there are plenty of more affordable coins that will make this set both fun and exciting. This set offers a lifetime of enjoyment as you continually add to and upgrade the coins from this historic Mint.

But still about thirty seconds longer than me.

An impressive undertaking. I look forward to seeing a long-running thread documenting your progress (hint-hint).

I have more NOs MM coins across all denominations in my collection. I love the "O". For some reason it has always just appealed to me. The majority of my collection is Liberty Seated dimes and second to that is Barber and Capped Bust. I wish I could have a CBD from the "O" but we know than I would have a coin rarer than a 1912 5c. I just posted three Morgans this week in the grading section, all from the "O". I now only own 4 Morgan dollars and you can guess what mint they're from.

T-Bone, that will be an impressive set and please post as you go.

Will someone alert General Moe to perhaps running the next "Days Of..." to be dedicated to that one and only mint with big easy love? THAT would be an awesome thread.

@ Cascade and Connor

Well that means you have a huge head start on the set. Might as well keep the ball rolling towards the rest of the O mint coins ;)

My set is only missing 2 coins, not including the 95 proof of coarse

Who cares about O mints. It's all about the Morgan

Message received!! Personally, I think highlighting the New Orleans Mint with a "Days of..." thread would be amazing!! A new type of angle!

I have to do some research to make sure no denominations or years are missed.

I'll get back to ya!

Moe, there are some strange anomalies with certain denominations as to dates, but here is a list of all of the years that have at least 1 denomination of a New Orleans mint mark (looks like it would be a 55 day thread). I checked and I don't think any of the dates will be dead zones due to only ultra rare coins. One thing kind of interesting about the coins from the New Orleans mint is they are all either silver or gold. I'm fairly certain no copper or nickel coins were struck there. So we won't have any Half Cents, cents, Two Cents, Three Cent Nickel (there is 1 year of 3 cent silver, 1853) and no shield or Liberty nickels. This should be a fun one.
