Hello everyone, which modern 1oz Gold coin would you recommend that is not too much above the asking price of gold? For both collectability and investment purposes. Thanks in advance for any feedback.

If you are going to buy bullion shop as close to spot as possible. If I were looking for collect-ability I would buy pre 1933 gold. There are plenty of gold coins from the early days that sell reasonably close to spot. Slabbed coins only of course unless you are an expert.

Pre-1907 double eagles and eagles seem to sell much closer to spot in MS than do St. Gaudens double eagles and his $10 Indian heads.

That's easy, if it were me, I would buy a gold Libertad. The price difference at APMEX between a AGE and a Libertad is $20. They haven't released the final mintage of 2014 Libertads, but the 2013 was 2350, so the 2014 will probably be around that number. The 2013 American Gold Eagle was 743,500. Enough said. 2011 Proof Gold Libertad, $200 over spot at APMEX, mintage, 1100

Gold Librtad, interesting! The 2011 proof coin was the only one left too.1100 mintage in 2011 is crazy low, but will that translate into a market for them moving forward?

I would either get a Libertad or an AGE.

Now is only the 1oz coin a limited mintage, or is the 1/2 oz as well?

What, no multi-millionaires in the house ? 1.) It's Gold 2.) Your getting it close to spot 3.)It's a ridiculously low population I am taking that bet into the future.

If you want a "modern" .999 bullion coin I would get an AGE or a Canadian Maple Leaf.

Although APMEX currently has a 2007 1/2oz gold Libertad with a mintage of 500 for $59.99 over spot.

So a coin like the 2007 libertad, would buying an BU vs proof or certified be the smarter move?

I like Philharmonics - just because I like them. If you're looking for maximum return, I'd say a Buffalo or Panda would be the way to go.

APMEX has a Libertad Gold 1/4 oz MS70 PCGS for $785 Apparantly it's one of 6 coins graded MS70. Do I go for this rare beauty or stick with the 1oz coin of less rarity? Ugh!

Quote: Do I go for this rare beauty or stick with the 1oz coin of less rarity? We're talking PM's here, so more is... more. Ask yourself this question. Would you pay $3140 for an ounce of gold? Of coarse not, so why pay $785 for 1/4? When acquiring precious metals, you want as much as possible for as least as possible. Go big, or at least go for something that more proportionately represents your investment.
